Ugh DH he's got some baby teeth still (I didn't really know that was possible but here he is at 48 years old) went to the dentist today and seems that one of them the root (very small compared to the adult teeth obviously) may be infected. They are speculating he needs a root canal and sending him to an endo for a consult.

Anyone have this or heard of this?? Can't find anything online about root canal for these teeth. Mostly find stuff saying these teeth eventually just "fail" because they are weak and the small root makes them fall out or crumble then an implant goes in anyway!! If that's the case, why on earth would we do a root canal? Kinda nutty I think.

Just throwing it out there.

update 3/8/16 dh spoke to our regular dentist who reviewed the chart and discussed it with the dentist who covered him. He agreed it will probably not be good to do the root canal. also the one root is ok. a few scenarios: treat the infection (dh said the doc didn't elaborate), wait and see, or extract.

either way dh will see the endo for the consult to see what he thinks.

Re: left field q: anyone still have baby teeth and need a root canal possibly??

My niece needed a root canal for a baby tooth once but as a kid. They didn't want to just pull it bc of the growth of the new tooth or something.

My MIL has a baby tooth and she's in her 60s. She never got a new tooth there, so the baby one never got pushed out. They told her f it comes out or loose, they would pull it.

Where is this baby tooth? I'm not sure I would do the root canal bc how well can it withhold all that work? I feel like you're gonna do all that work and it's gonna not be strong enough to stick anyway.
Maybe 2nd opinion?

If it's in the back - maybe just pull it.

Its on the bottom towards the back; yeah I really don't think a root canal is the way to go but maybe we will try a second opinion. Just expensive to get xrays again etc..

Interesting that your MIL's has hung in there so long. It's not really bothering dh and he is leaning towards not doing anything about it at all. Which i can understand. Thanks for your input!

I'd get a second opinion but probably pull it. Root canals aren't really great for your overall health.

Yes this. A root canal of mine caused an infection in my gum so I had to get the tooth extracted, eventually getting an implant done.

I'm in the field. Many people are congenitally missing adult teeth so the baby teeth don't fall out. In my professional opinion a root canal on a baby tooth on someone your husbands age is a very short term solution. He will ultimately loose the tooth. It's far better to extract it now and prepare the site for a dental implant, then place a crown on that.
ETS: if you need recommendations for a second opinion let me know.

Thanks everyone for your input! I'm glad I posted this. sunnyplus3 thank you so much, I think we're going to decline the endo consult altogether and if the tooth starts to bother him (right now it's not a problem) get it pulled and talk about the implant.

Glad I can help, just one other piece of advice if I may. Waiting until it hurts might be a bad idea. Retained baby teeth can sometimes be ankylosed. This is a condition that causes the tooth to fuse to the bone because the natural ligament is not present. This will make it a fairly difficult extraction. If your husband waits until the tooth hurts it could become seriously infected, infection lowers the ability to achieve adequate numbness. He will want to be very numb and not struggling with an infection if the tooth is ankylosed. Also, a tooth that needs a root canal is really a chronic infection in your head. Having a chronic infection of any kind is not good for your overall health. Antibiotics will only put it at rest temporarily, the only solutions are root canal or extraction.
Hope that helps!

excellent advice, I appreciate it! Will discuss with dh and make a call to the dentist to discuss. What was somewhat annoying during his visit (and mine, we had our cleanings the same day) was that our primary dentist was on vacation and the office did not let us know; rather one of the other office dentists saw us. DH was mad about this and wants to discuss his issue with our primary when he gets back from vacation to get his opinion, as he's a pretty straight shooter. Not to say that he won't want to contradict what his affiliate said, but to just get his view after he looks at the xrays.

And from now on before we see the dentist we will be calling to confirm that it's our primary who will be seeing usChat Icon

No snark just curiosity

The infection was not there before the root canal
Was done??

And what's the alternative,if you believe they are not good for your health
