Just got home from the dog park

I have been going alot this year to the one in Bay Park , Hewlett/East Rockaway. I don't understand what I am doing wrong. I have to say the people are not that friendly but they are getting a little better and accepting of me. I always try to talk to them and be social so they really do not have a choice but to talk back.. So that's not the big problem..

The deal is my dog does not play!!!!! Chat Icon She just stays by me the whole time jumping up for me to pick her up.. I did the not picking her up thing and even picked her up and put her in the middle of the place and she just runs back and hides under my chair.. Its so embarrassing.. she is not even 2 yet!!! She should be running jumping playing with the rest of the dogs!!! If there is a dog at my house she loves to play and run around in the back yard.. its obvious she feels more comfortable on her turf. I know that already.. But how can I get her to be more social and excited when we go to the park?? She is a P I T A.. She is so not friendly.. She is not agressive or mean but just very scared and non reactive.. I am so frustrated over this.. I go at least 3x a week and NOTHING changes.. Should I just give up.. Its obvious she hates it!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Also I forgot to add she is the most loving friendliest adorable dog to people and other dogs if she is home or on the leash walking.. Its so Bizzare..

Re: Just got home from the dog park

Misty refuses to play at a dog park...ask Jennie0898 and JuJu...she literally just stands next to me the whole time.
Walk her in the woods either alone or with another dog and she's the happiest dog in the world, running and playing.
I think that some dogs are just not into running around for no reason. Misty wants to sniff stuff and play chase through the trees...she's just not into running across a 1/2 acre piece of dirt.
I've come to accept that and take her to the woods either alone or with a friend. It's better for me too since I am walking and not sitting/standing.

I took Rudy once. He loves dogs and people. When we got to the park no dogs around. We let him he sniffed and his hair stood up. I will not take him back. Im to afraid. But walk him in around the block and he loves other dogs!

I do take her to the park...just not the dog park.
We usually go to Belmont or Blydenburgh and walk on the trails. She enjoys that so much!

Re: Just got home from the dog park

dont worry, she just isnt into it. dharma is the same way. she just wants to be held or sit next to you at the run.
tinky just likes t try to be the queen at the park, so i dont bring her to a mixed run cuz i dont want her growling at a big dog and getting eaten. lukin is in heaven at teh run. chew i havet taken yet as he is too young. some dogs llllllloooooove it, others culd take or leave it, some hate it.

its just her personality!Chat Icon i dont think you can force her to like it.

Murray doesnt play either, he jumps up on us almost saying "get me the he ll out of here" hes misreable but the trainer we use wants us to keep taking him and thinks he might eventually play. We did not socialize him enough as a pup - lesson learned

Re: Just got home from the dog park

I guess I am guilty also.. I tried to but the dogs were so big she couldn't relate and was terrified. I was told I baby her too much and she doesn't know she is a dog Chat Icon I just cant help it she is my baby and I cant imagine life with out her. I love to snuggle with her and hold her and kiss her and play with her. She is such an obedient dog.. She listens to every word I say and obeys 99.9% of the time. I am so lucky in this aspect. But I want her to be a dog also and play around and have fun with with other dogs. I cant keep having play dates. And I have already decided another dog is not an option at this time. Oh well I cant force to be what she isnt. I ruined her Chat Icon

Diana,

You didn't do anything wrong. Otis is the same way he loves to meet other dogs one on one. he doesn't like a whole pack of them at once. He just freezes up and stays right by our sides. He like to take his time and sniff them out and watch first. I used to take him to pug parties all the time when he was younger but then I was would watch him and he would be the only one by himself because he didn't want to be in the pack and I didnt want to stress him out so we just do one on one visit with dogs and he loves that!

This is the truth, the whole, so help me God.

Misty was my DH's favorite dog there! She stood there hanging out with us not running around like a lunatic (like my Arnold). It was hysterical!

Oh and I don't think you ruined your dog!!! She just might not like the dog park. Dogs have personalities just like humans and the dog park just might not be her thing which is totally fine!

I wouldn't force her to go, it's apparent she's not a happy camper there.

Lexy is the same way. She wants all of the people there to pet her and wants nothing to do with the other dogs!!!

I decided to stop taking her.. She really hates it. I have never seen a dog of her breed there any way.. It may be the breed as well. But thats weird because dogs are dogs the are pack animals.. Oh well its not the end of the world! Chat Icon

Re: Just got home from the dog park

Luna hates the dog park too. Too bad too because she loves to run. She's a scaredy cat and won't let other dogs sniff her bum (rude much!?). Most time she finds a bench and sits under there until we drag her out and bring her home.
