Just booked tickets to TX--6/11 updated with album

I'm so excited. I've always wanted to visit there. And DH's sister lives near Houston so we're going to spend a few days there.
Anybody been there, can they recommend things to see and do?

TIA!

5/5---We will be flying into Hobby airport. It seems all the car rental companies are off site. Can anyone recommend a company that is close to the airport since we will need to take a shuttle to pick up the car.

TIA

6/11---got back last night. Didn't get to see as much as I wanted, but we still had a great time.
Link to some pictures if anyone's interested.

When I lived there my favorite thing to do with visitors was go hiking in Brazos Bend State Park. Watch out for alligators!

All of the major museums -- fine arts, contemporary arts, etc. -- are free. My favorite, the Menil Collection/Rothko Chapel isn't free but is stunning. The Orange Show ($1) is a bizarre homage to the orange. It's great fun.

The butterfly center is really neat. You walk among thousands of gorgeous butterflies.

The zoo in Hermann Park is pretty decent. The park itself is a nice place for a picnic.

The Galleria is a HUGE upscale mall. Rice Village is a more casual outdoor mall with some good restaurants and bars.

NASA's mission control is just outside of Houston. They have tours and movies.

Will you be there during the rodeo? I think it's usually in March. That's a fun way to soak up some Texas culture.

My parents live outside of Houston so we fly into Hobby all of the time. As for the rental car companies there are desks in the airport by baggage claim and they will shuttle you to where the cars are which are right down the street like 2 min away. It is easy. Don't worry.

The Galleria is fun! It is a huge mall with lots of shops (some upscale) and restaurants. There is also an indoor ice skating rink.

The museum of Natural Science is nice and they usually have good exhibits and IMAX shows.

The Zoo is nice too.

I like to walk/drive around by Rice University and the surrounding area which is Rice Village. There are lots of nice shops and restaurants. Mi Luna is a great Spanish (tapas) restaurant.
Galveston and Keema areas are nice. They are about 30 min from Houston and by the water. There is an aquarium in Keema and some nice gardens called Moody Gardens.

Definitely get some good Mexican and BBQ food. Papasitoes is a Tex-mex chain that has amazing fajitas and margaritas!

Wow, my whole reply revolves around food! That is sad! But there are lots of great places to eat and they are all affordable! Have fun!!
