jouvenile Diabetes?

Anybody have any experience with this??

I'm thinking of having my 7 year old tested. He has always been a snacker- if he doesn't eat every 2-3 hours, its like Jekyl and Hyde- he completely turns into a different kid, just throws fits, screaming, whatever.... Then once you give him something to eat, he's back to normal.

I asked the doctor about it when he was maybe 4... and back then, the doctor said that he was young, his body was probably still just getting used to how to handle feeling hungry, that kind of thing. But maybe i didn't stress enough how drastic the mood change is when he hasn't eaten in awhile.

Now that he's 7 and its still going on, i want to look more into it. As far as i know, its not a problem in school- his teacher loves him, says he does great, i never get any calls about behavior issues or anything. But then again, they have a morning snack around 10:30, eat around 12:45 and he's home at 3:15 and i give hi a snack as soon as he gets home.... so he's getting something every 2-3 hours.

just looking for any experience/ advice/ anything Chat Icon Thanks!!

Re: jouvenile Diabetes?

honestly he could just have low blood sugar when he hasn't eaten.
I get that way myself when I am hungry.
I would definitely get him looked at, but I wouldn't jump to the Diabetes conclusion just yet.

Re: jouvenile Diabetes?

I was diagnosed at age 12. Some of the common symptoms are very frequent urination (every hour). Constant hunger, not just at intervals. Since the body can't process the sugar, it's never getting any energy, so it's always in starvation mode.

Very sluggish and tired all the time.

It only takes a few seconds to do a finger prick blood test. While the symptoms you're listing aren't typical, it's really easy to check.

I check my DC every once in a while, for hereditary reasons, with my own equipment.

My DC are almost 12 and 15, and they've always eaten every couple of hours.

thanks! yeah... i know i might be jumping the gun a little bit. its just that the behavoir/ mood change is SO drastic from when he's hungry to after you feed him. lol i have a friend from HS whose 4 year old was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and she said one of the big things they noticed was that her daughter was almost bipolar type mood swings due to her blood sugar changes. So it has me thinking more about my son...
you're right though- i just have to have it checked to know either way..

Thanks- this helps. he's definitely not sluggish- he basically does karate moves all over the house! LOL like cartwheels into the bathroom to brush his teeth HAHA and he been doing his basketball and lacrosse with no problems. and i don't notice him peeing excessively, or more often than usual.... so it may just be that he can't handle feeling hungry LOL
i have a friend whose 4 year old was just diagnose with type 1, and she had said one of the biggest things they noticed was mood swings as her blood sugar changed or whatever--- so it just has me thinking about my son, since its such a HUGE change from when he's hungry to when you feed him LOL
