Shelter: All calls are for Jesse

January 27, 2006

The Brookhaven animal shelter was overwhelmed yesterday with more than 300 phone calls and countless e-mails from people who want to adopt Jesse, the family golden retriever who inadvertently strangled 6-year-old Kaitlyn Hassard on Tuesday.

Mark Grossman, deputy Brookhaven supervisor, said the shelter received so many phone calls inquiring about adopting Jesse that it was tough to even get through to the shelter yesterday.

"Clearly this animal is going to have a good home," said Grossman."I think people clearly understand. ... This was just an accident and this is not a vicious animal."

The town could not begin the adoption process because the Hassard family has yet to officially relinquish ownership, Grossman said. Shelter officials are keeping a list of the interested people.

I know, it makes me want to cry Chat Icon Although it's so unfortunate what happened, it was still unintentional.

Jesse seems like such a sweetie. This was a horrible accident. He must be so confused.

I'm glad he will have a loving home
