Iron deficiency?

DD was diagnosed with Iron deficient anemia, the Ped. said it was very slight, but she still has to take vitamins for at least 6 months. I am quite surprised by this diagnosis since she has not exhibited any symptoms of iron deficiency. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this experience. Thanks!

Re: Iron deficiency?

At DD's 9 mo visit the ped said she was borderline - not enough for an iron vitamin yet though - he said to try to bulk it up through food naturally before her next visit. He suggested fortified cereal. I give her that for breakfast every day. At her 12 mo visit she was perfect - no more issue at all. She didn't have any syptoms at all although I am not sure what those would be. It was seen at her routine blood work. That said, she was borderline, not yet anemic. HTH!

Re: Iron deficiency?

Do you give her red meat? That worked for me. Also black strap molasses.

Yes, she eats red meat, but I realized probably not enough. We gave her a lot of chicken and turkey. But I did breastfeed until 10 months not sure if that matters...I will try the molasses too, thanks!

Re: Iron deficiency?

I have been iron deficient my enough life. I go thru phases when its serious or like now where its very mild. I try to eat as much iron rich foods as possible.

with the exception of bouts of tired, i've lived a normal life with it.

Re: Iron deficiency?

I had to give Erik iron supplements for 3 months. I *think* it was following his 1yr bloodwork. He re-tested perfectly fine after the supplements.

Re: Iron deficiency?

my ped says its pretty common and usually due to taking in too much milk, calcium interferes with iron absorption.

He says, once they start milk, no more than 18oz a day.
