installing a kitchen faucet
Do you really need a plumber to install a kitchen faucet or can you DIY if you're handy?
Due to a miscommunication, I thought our countertop installers would be sending someone to install the faucet. They're not (long story). So now all the water in the entire house is turned off - they turned it off to install the sink and countertop.
I HIGHLY doubt I can get a plumber out before Monday. DH is handy, but I can't get a hold of him right now. Is this something we really need a plumber for? I don't mind paying one -- I just highly doubt I'll get one to come same day, which means we'll now be without water at least until Monday. I can't even offer to let the workmen us the bathroom now, and we'll have dry wall guys here all weekend!

Or, in the alternative... shouldn't there be a separate shut off for the sink only so that we can have water to the sink off, but have the water in the rest of the house on?

you should be able to get a plumber out there. I've never installed a faucet but I would be to stressed out to try it with all the work going on in your house.

Look under you sink. There should be a valve for just the sink water.

I've replaced several faucets in the bathroom and kitchen. There should be two shut-off valves, one for the hot, and one for the cold. The trickiest part is getting the nut loosened under the faucet. Some of them are plastic, so it's not too bad. As long as you have some good pliers, and a set of open-ended wrenches, or monkey wrench, it should take 30 minutes total (old one out, new one in). Plumbers teflon tape is a good idea to use on the supply lines, to prevent leaks.

Replacing faucets is actually easier than you think. The key is that you need the proper wrenches from Home Depot. You can do it! We replaced 3 faucets so far and we are doing the remaining 5 faucets this weekend.

Getting the old one out is the harder part, so it should be pretty quick. Hook up the water supply line to the faucet first, then just drop the new faucet in the hole, put the nut on from underneath, and attach the supply lines to the wall supply. If you attach the supply lines before putting the faucet in, it's much easier to work out in the open, rather than hooking them from under the sink.

I just printed off 5,000 illustrations / instructions online for installing faucets and these directions. Come heck or high water (pun intended), I'm getting that faucet working!
