In 2nd week of potty training (wearing underwear only), 2nd day of preschool and was told to put him in pull ups...

So day 1 he had a #1 accident BUT he told the teacher he had to go potty but by the time they got him to the bathroom he wet himself and did #2. I was so pround of him that he went up to the teacher. I think he did #2 before he did #1 on day 1 though and said nothing. On the second day they tried putting him on the potty and he wouldn't go. 20 minutes later he did #1 and 2. Now the school recommended he wear pull ups for a little while...

I'm in agreeance with it I'm just so sad that it's not clicking yet to just go to the potty. I hear so many "my child was potty trained in two days"...I know it's different for every child...how much longer could it actually be??? As soo as he gets home I will be ripping the pull ups off and straight into underwear again and I know at school they will help me potty train by bringing him to the potty.

Did it take 3+ weeks for anyone else to get 100% potty trained? Any other advice? Potty training STINKS!!!

hmmm IMO I dont think they should be telling you to go to pullups b/c of a couple accidents. If you truly feel he's not ready thats one thing, but if you think he's doing good with it at home then maybe stick with the underwear.
My DS went to daycare the 3rd day we had begun toilet training (it was a tuesday). The day before he had only had 1 accident, well that day he had like 3 or 4. I was soo upset when I picked him up b/c he had done so well the day before, but his teacher said somtimes it takes longer at daycare. I even asked if I should go to pullups and she said no way, dont go back. So we stuck with the underwear b/c he was really into going on the potty, he just had to learn to identify when he felt it coming and how to hold it. Plus he wasnt going back to daycare for a full week so it gave me time to get him used to it at home. By the end of that week (friday-saturday) he was trained. I really think it was because we stuck underwear. You have to do whats good for your child, but I found with my DS he just used the pull-ups as a diaper. It's really trial and error with each childChat Icon good luck!

don't listen to anyone that says their DC was trained in a week, a day, an hour. Most kids will train at their own pace. Maybe pull ups will be beneficial for your DC. My DD wore them for about a week, and then we just switched to underwear.

Hope it works out for you.

appreciate the reply. He's great at doing #1 on the potty but he will do #2 in the underwear and not say anything. So I can see how it's hard for them (the teachers) to know to bring him to the potty because he wont say anything when its' #2. I'm thinking I will try two more days with underwear and see what happens. It was his first week of school and I know he needs to get used to his surroundings too and teachers. I know I will be saving underwear if I put him in pull ups because they throw them out when its #2. If I do put him in pull ups and I'm going to make sure they still remind him to go to the potty and even bring him if he doesn't have to go.

My DD had problems at first in Daycare with potty training... Honestly it took about a good 2 or 3 months for everything to click in.

In my honest opinion I think the teacher is being lazy by telling you to put him back in diapers. They need to feel the "uncomfortableness" in order for them to know they need to ask/ tell the teacher before they have to go. (and even then sometimes the teachers are not quick enough when they tell them they have to go.

Good luck and stick to your guns!

He's in his 1st year of preschool and the rest of the kids in his class are not potty trained I know. The class is almost 3 like my son and 3 years and a few months (kids ages)

Chat Icon I think I'm willing to sacrafice 5 more underwears for next week. I was told that the school helps with potty training so they should be on top of him about it and help him.

If he's not having pee accidents at home I think they need to work with you on this one. I don't think you should go backwards and put him into pullups.

He's still young. This is a tough one. I see your point...you obviously dont want to move backwards and put him in pull-ups. But from the teachers prospective he had accidents two days in a row which is a distraction for him and to the class, especially if they have to clean it.

DD is still potty training, we have been at it for over 2 weeks now and I can see it taking a while longer.

Don't get me wrong, we have had a lot of progress-she goes on the potty for number 1 no problem, however we are still giving her rewards for number 1 and she has yet to go number 2 on the potty so we have at least 1 accident a day either at home or at school.

Also, we put her in a pull up at night. Most days she wakes up dry, but not consistently.

She asks to go potty a lot, however we still have to suggest it to her.

To me, she is not fully potty trained until:
1-she does #1 and #2 on the potty
2-we do not have to ask her/remind her to go potty
3-she has no accidents
4-she consistently wakes up from naps and bed time dry
5-she does all of this without a "treat" or prize.

So, it will be a while longer.

A good tip that Barb suggested-use pull ups but put them over the undies. THis way they still feel wet but you don't have to worry about accidents. We do not do this at home but we do it when we go out.

Do not feel discourages at all!!! We started potty training in May and I have to say that within the last couple of weeks I can now finally say he is potty trained. He turned 3 a few days ago.

My thoughts on potty training are this . . . if it takes more than the weekend (for day - not night) your child is not ready. IMHO, all those mommies who say they trained for a week, three weeks, a month whatever, and then in one weekend it just clicked and their child was trained, failed to recognize their child wasn't ready and kept at until the child was ready - that's what the "click" was.

I really have to agree with you on this one. I tried PT Jack right before he turned three. He hardly had any accidents, but he was only going when I put him on the toilet - he never told me when he had to go. I did this for one week. He kicked and screamed every single time he went.

I tried again (3 weeks ago on Sunday) and it just clicked. He was telling me when he had to pee. He still has occassional accidents when he is too involved with something he is doing, but otherwise it's been SO much easier. But, he also poops in his underwear. He has gone on the potty twice now, but is still not comfortable with it. I'm fine, as long as he's pooping at all...I don't want him withholding.

Same for us-this time around is so different from the first.

When we first started, DD stood up on a kitchen chair and peed all over my floor and chair and was traumatized (I did not like mopping at 6 am). This time, she is excited, intersted, etc.
