If your DC has asthma, do they see a pulmonologist?

Just wondering if most kids do. If their asthma seems under control by the ped, did you still seek a pulms opinion? My DS seems to be brought on by colds, allergies, etc, so I am wondering about an allergist as well....

Ds has RAD is on the verge of being diagnosed with asthma. His like your DS is brought on by colds and allergies. We have seen an allergist where they just gave us advice on using Zyrtec. Our ped pretty much has it under control and are very proactive about it.They get him on steroids and the neb right away at the slightest sign of a wheeze.

We see an allergist and he is amazing. We tried a pulmonologist..they really didn't help at all.

Re: If your DC has asthma, do they see a pulmonologist?

My DD is 6 and we haven't been to a pulminologist or an allergist as of yet. We are planning on taking her to get allergy tested in the next month or so. Our pediatrician told me that a lot of allergies can change by about 5, and I was a big chicken about taking her to get bloodwork, so I have put it off, but I know it is time.

She takes pulmicort daily at night before bed and it does do a great job of keeping her asthma under control. She ends up needing albuterol/prednisone a few times a year, usually in the fall. I'd love for none of that but we'll see what happens!

Yes, he has. My youngest is 2 1/2 and basically the pulmonologist confirmed the treatment his pediatrician had recommended (Singulair and Pulmocort) and so we only see the pulm sporadically. He does go on Albuterol if necessary.

DS had RAD and luckily eventually outgrew it.

We did see a pulmonologist at Winthrop every 6 months. Then once a year. It was helpful to talk to a Dr who specialize in pediatric pulmonology.

I loved that Dr. He was so nice! We talked preventive medicine. What to do when sick, etc... He was very helpful to make me understand the present and future in our plan of action.

After DD got bronchitis at 9 months, the ped suggested we see a pulmonologist. When she was 2 she got pneumonia. At that point he put her on a preventative inhaler. She hasn't really been diagnosed with asthma per se, but it's borderline. We are hoping it will be something she grows out of.

My son has been seeing a Pulmonologist since he was 4 months old. He was only referred after several cold that turned horrific. The put him pn steroids for 1.5 years and it was a God send. he has now been steroid free since May and has had not even a sniffle. This is a kid that was so sick, that the first 1.5 years of his life was spent at the doctor!! I would see one.

We went to the pulmonologist and he told us to do the same thing w/DD. We were told she had RAD, but really it was just the forever horrific cold each time she gets sick. Coughing all night. So when shes sick I neb her at night. I thought the suggestion of doing everyday for a year was overboard. Interesting to see it worked. Was your DS the same way?

Re: If your DC has asthma, do they see a pulmonologist?

yes, every 6 mos we check in since 20 mos old.

so much changed when we started seeing him.

I felt like ped was just pushing whatever drug was in the office at the time.

We were in the ER 4 times a month though-so we had hit rock bottom and ped told me to go to pulm.

the true test is next fall when he goes to kindergarten

my son was so bad, that within hours of having a runny nose, he would be coughing and gasping for air. this went on for 1.5 years. He was so young the first time it happened, i think six weeks old. He was diagnosed with RAD/Asthma. I have asthma and my DH has severe allergies. Honestly, it took me a few days to finally fill the prescription for steroids b/c you hear all of the side effects and such. he had none. We tried two different steroids and the second changed his life...the first was pretty much useless.

ETA: He was on a nebulizer with ALbuterol the first time at 6 weeks old.
