If your bedroom is on the first floor....

Do you sleep with the window open? Do you feel weird about it? My bedroom is on the first floor for the first time in many years. I love sleeping with the window open, but I feel really exposed somehow...like someone could just come up to the window and see me sleeping.

Re: If your bedroom is on the first floor....

Growing up my bedroom was on the first floor of a high ranch, which I found convenient during my teen years -- first floor window made it way too easy to sneak out!!

Oddly enough, I never worried about the window working the other way!

Now I live in a ranch and we moved in during the winter so it hasn't come up yet, but I think we are high enough up and far enough from the road that I won't feel uncomfortable.

Edited to add that we have a "locked open" feature on our windows, so that they can be open to a certain height that is not big enough for anyone to fit through and locked in that position.

We have in the past, but even though we live in a ranch, our bedroom window is still rather high up because of the grading.

Re: If your bedroom is on the first floor....

Considering the fact that every summer there seem to be a few incidents where homeowners are surprised by burglers coming in an open window I would not sleep with an open window on a ground floor or an upper floor if there was easy access, like a garage roof.

Re: If your bedroom is on the first floor....

You're not safe on the second floor either if there are any flat roofing areas like over a 1 story garage. The house I grew up in was almost burglarized when they put our own ladder against the house, climbed up on the roof, and attempted to enter through an unlocked window. Our neighbor's rottweiler scared them off. Good old Zeus. Chat Icon

Our first floor windows are six+ feet off the ground so it would be possible, but not convenient, to enter that way. We don't usually leave them open but that's because our neighbor's teenagers like to hang out on our corner late into the night.

Re: If your bedroom is on the first floor....

I was just thinking this exact thiing the other night. We are looking to buy a house now. I have always had my bedroom on the second floor, in some cases growing up it was the third floor and we just put an offer on a ranch and I was thinking - Hmmm I guess I won't be sleeping with the windows open.

We sleep will all of the windows on the first floor closed and locked. I've tried a few times to sleep with the window cracked but you can hear everything..car doors, people talking, it's just too noisy.
Plus I just feel much safer with all of the downstairs windows locked. Way too many break-ins now a days.

Re: If your bedroom is on the first floor....

you put guards on your windows. My parents have a cape and at one point they rented the updstairs part to my uncle and we lived on the main floor. We had the windows open all the time and they sleep with the windows open now but not all the way up. They have these locks you put so you can push the window up all the way to squeeze in with out making a HUGE noise. I plan on doing this whenever we buy our house because I enjoy windows open.

Re: If your bedroom is on the first floor....

DH is a really light sleeper and although he likes the fresh air I think the noises from outside would keep him awake. I had nightmares all the time as a child of burglars climbing in my window (2nd story, but right next to the garage), although nothing like that ever happened in my neighborhood…I must have seen it in a movie or something and had recurring nightmares for years….so the answer is no, and I lock the windows all the time!

Re: If your bedroom is on the first floor....

We occasionally sleep with the window open, but the windows open to the backyard, so no one SHOULD be back there at night - I would probably feel differently if the window was in the front of the house. And I would never do it without blinds or curtains.

Re: If your bedroom is on the first floor....

If your house is alarmed you can also get alarms for the windows that allow you to have them open about 6 - 8 inches and still set the alarm. If anyone tries to open it the alarm will trigger.

We just got an alarm, but we also have CAC, so I don't plan on keeping the windows open when we sleep. If I slept on the second floor, I probably would though...
