If you moved to North Carolina from the tri-state area

Was it worth it?

I know housing and taxes are less, but most everything else seems the same. We have loved both our visits and are seriously considering a job opening if it happens.

What else can you tell me about NC, especially the Raleigh area? We wish it could be Charlotte, but there is no office there for DH.

We aren't into night-life, but are avid sports fans. We also have a child and may consider another in a few years.

ETA: We don't have family on LI. Our closest relative is over an hour away. Down there our closest relatives would be 2-3 hours away.

TIA!!!!!!!

One of my good friends lived there while her ex-husband was in the Marines. She is originally from NJ. He didn't re-enlist so they moved back to NJ and bought a house. She misses NC a lot, but her job is here and so is her family.

Re: If you moved to North Carolina from the tri-state area

Here's my latest facebook status:

So hard to make NC friends...was I reaching yesterday when I told the cable guy to have his wife call me for a pool playdate? LOL

Yup...I solict everywhere and anywhere. I did not know anyone down here when we moved. I am part of 2 mom groups, but its hard to chat with up while I chase 2 boys around.

My DH works around the clock. I am not an introvert at all. I have never been a homebody.

These are my NC challenges.

If my parents or sisters would move down...things would be different. That's the feeling I am lacking.

But you are right, prices here are about the same for everything except taxes and real estate. DH loves it, I mean really really LOVES it. I love him and I love staying at home, so I am hoping one day all cards will fall into place.

The job market here is hardcore. So if your DH has an in that's terrific news.

Speaking as a mom of a little boy, this is the place to be. There are more parks then you can imagine, hiking trails, biking trails, lakes with diving docks, trains, cowboys, skiing, sports events that you can afford and have money left for a hotdog, truck rallies, rodeos...

I REALLY love where I live. Bought a new 3 bedroom townhouse, garage, for 140K. School system I am zoned for is excellent. Crime is almost non exsistent. 1/2 my community is from NY.

You gotta fill me in on these parks. We drove alllll the way to uptown to go to the park on the first nice day this spring, and we actually had to wait on a line of cars to get in Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon There were so many people that we didn't really enjoy ourselves.

As far as how I feel about it--it was ok when my sister lived here. But she got transferred to CA with her job, and now I have almost zero interest in being here anymore. Don't get me wrong, I have made some great friends here, mostly through work, but they don't compare to my friends back home Chat Icon

As Janice said, it's difficult to meet people and you find yourself chatting people up in the supermarket if you see that they have kids around your DC's age. But hey, whatever works.

I think the biggest adjustment for me has been the change of pace. I loved the fact that there was always SOMETHING going on on LI. I don't find that to be the case here.

I personally think it's REALLY, REALLY important to have family nearby. I miss my sister so much, I can't wait for her to come back Chat Icon

we only go during the week.

my favorite is a private church park...its the best. Calvary in Ballantyne.

William Davie
Pineville Lake Park
There's a great one in the middle of Dilworth
Cane Creek Park
Beattie Park
Park Rd Park
Carmel Park...

those are on our most frequent lists.

I find that there are a lot of things to do down here...you just have to do them all, some are a hit, some a miss...but most are priced just right.

We love the mountains. I love the Biltmore. We went to Pigeon Forge. Drove down to Savannah for the day. Went to Charleston. Wilmigton. Drove to Myrtle Beach for a day trip. Stayed in the Smokey Mountains. Gone to every zoo around...children's musuem.

Then its nice, last week in NY, we went to Mus Natural History...saw the dinosaurs. So its great to be a NYC tourist...which we are so often.

For sports, the Carolina Hurricanes (hockey) play in Raleigh, and the Durham Bulls (baseball -- the Tampa Rays farm team) play in (obviously) Durham. College sports are HUGE, especially in Durham and Chapel Hill b/c of Duke and UNC.

I can't wait to take Josh to the racetrack. DH is worried about his ears, but I think this year will be okay.

Concert tickets are so easy to come across. and cheap.

If you are a baptist or born again, don't worry about not starting off with friends, you will have a million in no time.

Re: If you moved to North Carolina from the tri-state area

I lived just outside Raleigh for 8 years until I moved to LI.

I was bored.

Now, people fom "up North" came down South and now it's more "yankee" than it ever was.

The prices have gone up drastically. Mostly because people from the North were willing to pay a house for $300K and thought it was a great deal, while the local population thought $120K was a normal price for a house. So things have changed.

The taxes are lower. The weather is much warmer.... You and your DH would love the warning of twisters on the radio and you run to your local Walmart until the twister is gone. BTDT!!!! You can't not love Hurricane season either in September.

But you still have traffic to go to work. If you don't leave in Raleigh and work in Raleigh it will take you 30+ minutes to go to work. There are some good and bad areas.

LOL! You know us too well! We are big fans of Hurricanes. And I'm not talking the hockey team.

I will have a lot more questions for you as the year goes on. Chat Icon

Re: If you moved to North Carolina from the tri-state area

We moved for more bang for our buck. We live in Matthews on the East Charlotte border. I love the weather. I hate the people. PERSONALLY I have come in contact with some really very racist people who forgot they lost the war.

That being Said, I agree with Beth and Janice about meeting people. It is hard. They are not to fond of Ny's, and that is the kicker there are A LOT of NY's here.

We are in the process of moving back. I miss my family, its hard having an infant and NOT having any family around. It stinks actually. If I could have them all hee it would be much different, we would stick it out. BUT they wont leave the island, so we are going to them.

The weather is fantastic, I never had a winter jacket on all season (It didnt fit due to the PG, but I never needed it either).

Thats my take. Chat Icon

Re: If you moved to North Carolina from the tri-state area

My husband and I moved here a year and a half ago, we love it but like the other ladies miss our friends and family. It is so beautiful and a great place to raise a family. I am just north of Charlotte.

For Beth and Janice:...maybe we should plan a get together. I don't have kids (yet) but would love to do coffee or lunch one day. Chat Icon

Re: If you moved to North Carolina from the tri-state area

I live in in Cary(right next to Raleigh) We like it here a lot. We have not made many friends but I think that is more our fault as we are somewhat homebodies. There is a lot to do here for young families and as AP said-college sports are HUGE here. If you are into NY teams you may have to pay a lot to get the games that you want-MLB and NFL packages through cable or go to a bar to watch games. The homes are really varied. If you are OK with a smaller 3 BD 2 bath in a community you can probably get one for low 200's. But if you want a larger house with an established enighborhood and a decent lot the prices are prob closer to 3-350. Check out city-data.com for more info-head to the forums and select Raleigh Chapel Hill

Re: If you moved to North Carolina from the tri-state area

My sister moved down there 10 years ago and will probably never move back. She lived in Raleigh, and Greensboro and is now inbetween the two.

I was just down there for Easter and my parents and I said the same thing if all of our family wasn't up here it is somwhere we would consider moving.
