I thought Brick was the best....?

I always thought that the preferred material for a house is brick over things like siding or stucco or whatever else there is.

But I was watching one of those shows on HGTV and the house was a brick ranch (typical of those homes in Bayside for example) and the designer decided to add siding to the front of the house to make it look better/classier.

But I thought Brick was the preferred material?
True, there is brick under the siding, but I thought Brick was also the preferred look over siding for a lot of people.

Re: I thought Brick was the best....?

I HATE the look of brick on a house. Natural stone is very nice (I have some on my house that I had installed), but I definitely don't like brick.

If I bought a house with a brick facade, I would probably cover it with something else, too.

I think its a matter of preference. I like brick but I am picky about which brick but I like brick and I think if building a house it is more expensive to build brick than siding.

I prefer brick but only certain types. I would never choose siding over brick!

I strongly prefer brick. My house now has siding and I don't love it. I HATE when I see brick painted.

Re: I thought Brick was the best....?

It depends on the brick...i have some brick on the front of my house and to me it looks outdated. The house was built in the mud 70s and to me tbe brick looks very 70s.
We want to eventually replace or cover it

We have a split so most of it is brick and the upper portion is siding. I've seen people side the entire thing, covering the brick. Some painted it. But like stone, it can be done nice and it can be really hideous. Personally, I like brick. I like the ease of maintenance, the durability, and it's a classic look.

I love the classic look of brick as long as it doesn't look dated.

Same here. I dislike brick. I love the look of natural stone. I think it's just a matter of personal preference.

It depends on your tastes. I love brick, so to me brick is best. Other people not so much.

I don't like stucco--i know it is much cheaper to build but it looks dirty quickly. I dont mind siding but IMO a home looks better w some siding some brick or natural home, all siding looks kid of cheap to me

I have siding and brick. It is just the right amount of brick. Any more and I would shoot myself. It is about a 20 foot section on the front of my house, not the whole front. It is dark compared to my siding. I would replace if I could but that probably won't happen for 30 years.

Same here- there are some houses near us that covered the brick with siding and I like the way the brick looks better.

Thanks for all the replies....I think I worded my post wrong.

When I said:
"I always thought that the preferred material for a house is brick over things like siding or stucco or whatever else there is."

I didnt mean "prefer" as in "I like that or I like the look" I meant preferred as in "the best material"

I know some people prefer siding, some might prefer to have stucco or whatever but I meant that I always thought brick was the best in terms of overall quality.

I heard its helps to keep the house insulated and is very strong, etc...

Like DiamondGirl said - its more expensive to use brick.

Thats why I always though brick was a selling point, kind of like "We didnt skimp out on materials for the house, its all top quality materials"

Thats why I was surprised the home designer decided to cover up the brick in that show.
They covered up the 'expensive' item with cheaper item (isnt siding cheaper than brick?)

But covering brick does not undermine the structure and would have no effect on the foundation/structure of the building. And what is best for structure may not be visually appealing. If that was the case, we would all live in brick homes.

Many times, the brick is just a veneer on the outside of the house, just like siding, so it's not any stronger than anything else. I've seen many houses where the brick veneer is just falling right off the house. There's also not much insulation in standard bricks.
https://www.archtoolbox.com/materials-systems/thermal-moisture-protection/rvalues.html
Vinyl siding is actually a (very slightly) better insulator than brick veneer.

Siding is cheaper than brick, but there is some high-end siding with all sorts of designs and textures that is close to low-end brick work.

It also depends on the style of brick, the quality of the install, and how it's maintained. Sloppy brickwork, with cheap bricks that are crumbling, with the mortar falling apart will obviously look really bad and really cheap.

It all comes down to aesthetics. It doesn't matter how much something costs. If you don't like how it looks, it's not worth it.

Poured concrete (like most basements) is even better, structurally.... However, I definitely don't want to pull up in my driveway to a purely poured concrete bunker.... Chat Icon

Structually I mostly see homes made of wood in this area. From there siding, stone, brick, stucco is use to cover it up. My old home was cinder block construction and during any kind bad storm that's where I'd want to be. My parents own a rental 5 apartment building and it was constructed out of concrete, apparently it's fireproof. Covered in stucco though. I could see having cinder block or concrete as a potential benefit but ultimately I don't think most people care. If they did, more houses would be made from it.
