I think Alex is eating too much

I'm worried about my little girl... she's eating like a maniac. Before she falls asleep at night she eats between 6-8 ounces of breastmilk. For the last week she was only doing that at night, right before bed. But now, this morning, she woke up at 11am, while I was asleep so DH fed her and she ate about 6 ounces!! She's only 7 weeks... am I only the one???

I think that is a for that age. My daughter is 20 months old so I don't recall how much she was having at that age but it seems like a lot.But then again, my daughter was a preemie.
Want to add that every baby is different. Some need to eat more than others.

Re: I think Alex is eating too much

I read this in an article... It may apply to your baby's case. Hope it helps:

"As your baby grows older, you can anticipate changes in feeding and sleeping schedules. Feedings will begin to space out, and sleeping times will be more predictable. Deviations can occur when the baby undergoes growth spurts, typically at two weeks, six weeks, three months and six months. Your baby's food needs will increase; he will let you know this by suddenly feeding much more frequently for a few days. Simultaneously, you will notice a decreased volume of bowel movements because all his food is being used for growth."

I was given the estimate of 2-3oz per pound per day. How much does she weigh now? How many ounces total do you think she gets in a day. I know its hard to get a true idea when you're BFing though.
Miranda only eats about 12-18oz a day but a lot of that is because of her reflux. She normall only takes about 2oz at a feeding but just now she took 4 which makes me so happy.

Ok, that makes sense then because for the last few days her bowel movements have decreased significantly... it used to be like 8-10 a day and now it's maybe 2 or 3 and the decreased movements have coincided with her insane eating habits. Thing is, it seems like it's lasted for about 5 days now. I thought growth spurts only last a couple of days? I think she gets 30-35 ounces a day now Chat Icon

She's about 10lbs so maybe she's ok. I think she probably gets between 30-35 ounces a day.

That doesn't sound too bad.
Miranda's BM's have decreased and sometimes she'll skip a day or two which is all normal according to the doc. They like to know if she goes 3 days with no BM. They just want to see lots of wet heavy diapers.
I honestly don't know if a baby knows how to "overeat" like us adults to. I would think that they stop when they are full. At least Miranda seems to.

When Julia was that age she took 2-4 ounces. he is just starting to take 6 oz. now at 12 weeks. Does Alex eat less often though? Maybe she's eating a lot at each feeding and not getting hungry as often??? If that were the case that woul dbe GREAT!!

Yeah, I think that's the case. Like this morning, she ate about 7 ounces, but that was after sleeping soundly for about 5 hours. And for the rest of the day she just snacked. She usually cluster feeds at night right before bedtime and scarfs down between 6-8 ounces, and then sleeps for 5 or 6 hours, and even then, when she wakes she probably only eats an ounce or two and then sleeps for another three hours. So maybe she's ok. It's just weird to watch a 7 week old inhale 7 ounces in an hour though! Chat Icon

Re: I think Alex is eating too much

Emily is only 5 weeks and about 2 feedings a day she takes a full 6 oz. She has 4 oz all the rest of the feedings -- but I'm noticing that more and more she still acts hungry after the 4 oz so I'm thinking we need to offer her the 6 oz all the time now.

I always think that you should do what your baby tells you to. If she is acting hungry and seems to need a bit more at some feedings I think it's OK to give it to her -- she may be going through a growth spurt. I know that sometimes if Emily eats a LOT one days he'll eat a little less the next so it kind of evens it out.

Ok, that makes me feel better... that's exactly what she's doing now. Two LARGE feedings a day and the rest are smaller. Thank you!
