I need YA book suggestions...
for my classroom library. I am absolutely getting the Twilight series, but does anyone else have any ecs? I teach 7th grade. :)

The Alchemyst and The Magician.. they are the first 2 books from Michael Scott that is a story about Nicholas Flamel and the Sorcerer's Stone (they make no reference to Harry Potter) but they were great books

Maybe I am prude, but I wouldn't want my ((imaginary)) 7th grader reading Twilight - especially in school? Did you read it?

Even though there's really nothing offensive in the series, I agree that it's better suited for high school students.

I disagree. It depends on many factors. For example, in the school where I teach, it is a tame book. I gave it to one of the eighth grade kids to read. She was in my class last year and everything she read was so freaking trashy, but her mother was giving her those books and I couldn't prevent her from reading them. I thought this was a better option for her.

Yes, I did read it and many of my students are bringing it in on their own for independent reading. Except for a few scenes in Breaking Dawn, which I wouldn't bring in, I really didn't think that the other books were inappropriate at all. Am I forgeting something?
ETA: In the school I teach in, many of the students read adult novels as independent reading books. I have students right now that are reading books that I think may even be too much for them, but if their parents are ok with it, who am I to say they can't read it? I don't think there was anything in Twilight that my 7th graders can't handle.

I felt that there was a theme of sexual tension in all of the books AND she is practically begging for sex in some scenes. I read this series with a book club at my job and every discussion was about how "hot" the book was without ever going into any detail.
You would definitely know what your kids could handle, so I just wanted to make sure that you had read them - if my niece came home with these books from school I would probably urge her parents to go up to the school to talk to the teacher about it. JMO - like I said, you would know better what was appropriate for your students

I am sorry you feel this way. I think that these books are great pieces of YA literature and that your niece would be missing out. I have seen kids who loathe reading, pick up books like the Twilight series and devour them. They are not explicit and I don't agree that there is a theme of sexual tension in all of the books, but rather one of romance and love. Yes, there are some scenes in Breaking Dawn that I agree are intended for more mature readers, but even then, Meyers never goes into great detail. Many middle schools have put the Twilight series on their suggested reading lists and some even use them as full class novels. But, like you said, that is your opinion and you are entitled to it. I did not mean to start any drama, I was just looking for some other suggestions that my kids may like.
