I have severe IBS. There are certain foods that cause severe attacks...I mean there have been times all I could do is curl into a ball and scream. Broccoli is one of those foods. I don't know if its just an inability to digest it or what, but it's horrible.

Because of this issue, I have been scared to try certain foods with DS. I know it may be crazy...and may not affect him that way, but I would not wish this on my worst enemy...definitely not my baby. Today at daycare he was trying to snatch another baby's broccoli. I know he wants more challenging foods, and am affraid I may be limiting him because of my f'd up digestive system.

My question is should I try these foods or is this fear actually rational?

Thank you!

DH has IBS too, so poor DS doesn't stand much of a chance...but who knows, maybe it skips a generationChat Icon

I'm glad that I'm not the only one out there who has this cross her mind.

I have it! Mine did not occur until I was about 20 yo. Oh, my dad has it and most of my siblings.

DH is lactose intol..... so yup, DS is most likely doomed!

I think he manifests issues already anyway. He barely had solid stools still at 3 yo. His ped knows and his spectrum diagnostic makes him even more proned to digestive issues.

DS is such a picky eater I don't limit ANYTHING for him to eat if he is willing to try it.

So... he still gets icecream because I can't worry for this kid to be sheltered all his life. Chat Icon

I have the same god awful reaction to broccoli.

it came on my suddenly a few years ago, as I had eaten broccoli up til then my entire life with no issue.

I recently let him have broccoli though, after being so scared. I gave him a small piece and then waited....waited...waited.

two days and no issues. so he had it again. still no issues.

try it. Chat Icon

I have Crohns Disease and sometimes eating certain foods kill me....I do really worry about the kids having any bowel issues and I have given them all types of foods and so far everyone has been fine....I think just bc one parent has some type of issue doesnt mean the kids will get it...for example I have an allergy to PCN but the kids took it back when they were 6months old for an ear infection and were fine with it.....Good luck to you

I say try it.. hopefully he gets some good out of it now. I didn't manifest the really bad symptoms until I was 18-20 the doc says it usually won't hit until after puberty so I'll shove anything I can down her while she can still eat it. Chat Icon
