I looked up PIO shots online

I even found some links on YouTube of people doing the shots. Something I found out is that if you are not careful you can hit a blood vessel? They said to enter the syringe, pull it back the tiniest bit and if there is blood you have hit a blood vessel. Take it out and start all over with a new syringe.

Has this happened to anyone? How often? I would imagine it hurts. Chat Icon

This is the response I was hoping for! Thank you.
So you took it out and started over with a new needle?
You or (DH) pulled it out a bit and noticed blood and that is how you know you hit one?

This is the one I am dreading too but the way I see it is I've come this far I can't chicken out now. Think of how many people have done it and everything was fine.

Yup...its very rare that DH would pull back and find blood...although I did bleed a few times anyway...its really no big deal...the actual shot doesn't hurt at all...I know its hard to believe when you see the needle, but its trueChat Icon

i know your so right but i saw the needle and oh myChat Icon i was told not to ice it just give the shot then aply heat right after the nurse told me if you ice it before the shot the oil stays in that one place and can cause discomfort. so im going to try that and if it hurts to bad ill have to ice it before she said the ice will be just for the pinch of the needle but that it. when will you start you PIO shot? my transfer should be next weekend then thats when ill start

Re: I looked up PIO shots online

Out of all my PIO shots ( and I did 2 IVF cycles and also continued them through my 1st 10 weeks of pg) this only happened one time...Just a little bit of blood when DH pulled back- he changed the needle and did it again...The PIO is very intimidating to look at but , for me it ended up being no big deal at all- totally not as bad as it looks at all Chat Icon

I think I am at peace with the needle, it just the idea of hitting a blood vessel or anything else besides the muscle that I need to hit that is making me Chat Icon
You bled just from the act of what you were doing, not from actually hitting the vessel and that is ok. Thanks! Chat Icon

I wish I was in your shoes, closer to having the whole ordeal over with. I am only on day 9 of Lupron shots at this point so I have a while to go. I think I will skip the ice but definitely apply some heat afterward when it comes time for my PIO shots.

Good luck! Everything will be fine!Chat Icon

The needle has hit the vessel a few times. It doesn't feel any different. Actually, the PIO shots are not bad at all. The needle is just intimidating.

Re: I looked up PIO shots online

I just replied on Lolas thread the below

If you follow my little tips below... I promise they will NOT HURT AT ALL!!!

I iced the area for 10 mins, while icing I had the PIO in the needle sitting in between a heating pad heating up, then my DH did the shot, then I would lay down on the heating pad for 10 mins! I never really felt it or felt any pain or soreness afterwards!

I also laid over the couch "doggie style" when he did the shots for me... That was entertaining by itself! hahah lol.

Good Luck!!!

In regards to your question of the blood vessel... We did the shot for about 2 weeks and my DH never hit the vein... so I think for the most part it is rare.

Good Luck!!!
