I just signed up for Cord Blood Banking....

I am delivering next friday(via c-section) and my parents offered to pay for the cord blood banking the other day. Which is so... generous of them. I should not be surprised by their generosity, but they are just so incredible. Is anyone else doing this? I really wanted to but did not have the money until nowChat Icon

I would like to with this baby. With DS I was on the fence if we should do it or not. I was going to donate it, but I had DS on a Saturday and NSUH told us they dont do the donations on the weekend. Which place are you doing it with?

Re: I just signed up for Cord Blood Banking....

despite having a tight budget, we're making it a priority.

DH and I are both researchers, and we know that the uses of cord blood will only increase exponetially in the future. It very well could save a family member's life.. IMO it's sooo worth it.

we're likely going to do the payment plan, so the inital cost doesn't hit us like a ton of bricks....

I signed up with Via Cord. My Doc had a coupon for $250 off and recommends them. They have all different payment plans and options. If you give them the name and address of another p/g friend, (so they can send them info) they get $100 off and you get a $50 mastercard giftcard as well(bonus).
CBR is another popular one.

So how does it work when you are actually ready to store the cord blood. do you get a kit that you give at te hospital or does someone from the bank come?

We will be signing up with viacord. We also feel like it is a great opporunity to potentialy help family in the future. We were saying imagine if we decide not to do it and it could have saved our babies life...

They send you a kit that you bring to the hospital and you have to call them when your in labor and then when the baby is born. They will send a medical courier to pick it up.

Re: I just signed up for Cord Blood Banking....

Its about $2100 with viacord which includes the kit and 1st year storage, then storage is approx. $125 per year.

The Dr. may also charge a fee of about $250 to do the collection (not covered under insur.)

Re: I just signed up for Cord Blood Banking....

We did this with DD and used cryo-cell. They were very affordable and my sister did it with her three kids through them.

I plan on doing it through them when the new baby arrives in Sept.

We just signed up too with Viacord. It's a little pricey up front (we're paying ourselves) but we just felt it was worth it. Chances are we'll never need it but it's like an insurance policy, god forbid we ever do need it....it will be there.
