When was your last sono? They usually do one the first appt 8 weeks or so. Then again at 12 weeks and the nect is 20 weeks. SOme docs only do those three.

You could go to an outside facility if they won't do one.

My last sono was at 8 wks & I don't have another one scheduled until 17 wks but I don't mind waiting

Most outside facilities need a referral from your dr. You can always tell the dr that you're really worried about something (like you had some cramps or you fell) if you feel like lying

Mine wouldn't do another sono until the Level II (~20weeks), UNLESS I was opting to have an ultrascreen at 12weeks (which I did). The Ultrascreen is an early screen for Downs and other chromosome disorders.

Same here, except I opted out of the ultrascreen.

I had a sono at 5w6d and I don't have another until 12w3d. I was told that I would only have one in between if I started spotting or anything went wrong. I wouldn't ask if it's not your doctor's usual practice....you could end up with a big bill if insurance won't cover a sonogram for no reason.

It sounds like your doctor doesn't do the ultrascreen so your next sono won't be until 18-20 weeks for the level II. I think if you are 14 weeks at your appt you will be too late for the ultrascreen as it needs to be done between 11 and 13 weeks for accurate measurements.

They may do one if they have the equipment, but in the office I go to you have to go out to get sono's doneChat Icon

Sometimes it also has to do with your insurance and how many sono's they cover.

I had one at 7 weeks or so, the ultrascreen at 12 weeks or so, my level II at 18 weeks and then I would have been done, but I need to have a growth sono b/c I am measuring small.

But hearing the heartbeat is really amazing and such a great feeling.Chat Icon

I have found tha different doctors do them at different intervals. I am 16 weeks PG and have had 6 sonos already. No real reason, just went in for appts, and my doctor brought me into the sono room.

Ditto. But then I ended up having one anyway b/c I fell & had to go to the ERChat Icon

Re: i just called my dr office about my next appt-

my dr has it right in the office! I just find it odd that they wouldn't want to check to see that the baby is the right size and looks good, etc.

Re: i just called my dr office about my next appt-

Some Drs do not want to do too many sonos b/c:

1 - the insurance requires an additional co-pay & payment when the OV has a sono. A regualr check up is considered a follow-up visit & most times is not charged.

2- it makes time management more difficult for the office if every OB patient got a sono every visit

3 - there are still some Drs who do the sonos on an "as-needed" basis b/c of the lasting effects of getting too many sonos.

Re: i just called my dr office about my next appt-

As stated above - it is not too common for dr's to schedule a ton of sonos unless they detect something is wrong - I would be relieved they dont want to schedule another sono.

I was upset when they told me to come back so soon for another sono - my dr. told me they were concerned about the baby growing because the way the cord is entering the placenta, so I had to go for a growth sono almost every month....
