I feel terrible!!-UPDATE

yesterday afternoon DH & I were moving the mulch we had delivered around our yard & our dog Jack was obsessing over something in my DH's "sanford & son" section of our yard.
He is forever collecting stuff from jobs. So he has about 20 cases of marble tile stacked up-it was covered by I guess the tarp came off at some point, my dog is pawing at this stack of boxes that look like they're about to tumble & I'm afraid he get hurt. So I'm thinking he saw a frog(he loves frogs)go behind the pile. I ask DH to come & try to move the pile so the dog can't knock it down. When he moved the first box he revealed a bids nest & the nest pulled apart & a baby bird fell out. We quickly picked it up & put it back in, we counted at least three more. And we repostioned everything so the parents could come back.
I feel so bad, they are just getting their feathers, I think the are house wrens. The parents were flying around freaking out right after it happened.
I really hope they are able to keep them alive now that we disturbed the nest.
It was only about 2 feet off the ground!!!
So sad, if the babies are still there & alive tonight I'll bring them in & try to find a rescue place.

Thanks for all the replies!
Last night when I got home DH said he saw the babies flying in & out of the makeshift nest & the parents were nearby. Then I watched the babies fly(barely) out of the nest & follow the parent's song into the woods next to my house & I watched/listened as the babies followed the parent's lead to their new home. I guess it took them a day to make a new nest & the babies couldn't fly the day before. I hope they made it to their destination safely, they were adorable & the parents were so commited. It was neat to see!

Actually, it's a myth that birds will abandon their babies if you disturb/touch the nest. As long as the nest is above the ground and the parents can see/hear the babies, they should be fine.

Keep an eye (from a distance) to see if the parents return.

Re: I feel terrible!!

Awww - I know how you feel. We have a rather large Lilac Bush in our yard. Some years ago, I noticed that the Lab we had at the time was pawing at the base of it. I went over to see what was going and noticed that she had pulled out a nest that a field mouse had made. I wrestle her into the house (she was quite big) and go back to the bush. I was so upset. I see this little mouse up on one of the branches giving birth on one of the leaves!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Like it's not hard just giving birth, this poor creature had to run from my dog while in labor and give birth on a leaf. I felt to bad I wanted to cry.Chat Icon Chat Icon

This is what I was going to say. I worked at a wildlife rehab center, we told anyone who found an orphaned baby bird to try to find the nest and if possible put the baby bird back. Of course, this is hard, since some nests are so high. Some mama birds will even feed their babies who have fallen out of the nest, although the chance of predation obviously increases.

Keep an eye out for the momma. She may dive bomb your doggie if he gets too close to the nest again, but she will keep caring for those babies Chat Icon
