I feel kind of dumb for asking, but...
Can someone explain to me exactly what the term "hot mess" means??
I always took it to mean like a hot woman/man who is just in a frumpy outfit or has messy hair or something, but now I hear it being used for all types of stuff that makes me 
Please, enlighten me

I use the term to describe just about anything that is a big mess.  Whether its someone's outfit or a person's situation.
"Did you SEE what she was wearing today? What a hot mess!"
or
"How about the drama going on between Jack & Jill? That whole thing is just one hot mess!"

I think of the "hot" in hot mess as an exacerbator of some thing...
like hot dog **** or hot garbage..
the HOT just adds to the stench

this is how it was explained to me:
a hot mess is bran new poop... yes, as in it's still warm from the body.
so if someone is a hot mess, they are the worst kind of poop because the stink is still fresh and aromatic

This thread got me in a hot mess today!
I called out to the guys in the office whether they were HOT or just a HOT MESS and the front door was open and a girl happened to walk by from the business across the street. She looks at me like
I LMAO and  told her "Have a nice rest of your break" and closed the front door!
Just another day in the life of Phyl..
We didn't stop laughing for awhile after that.
