I crossed the border
DH and I went house hunting again this weekend but this time decided to cross county lines and check out Suffolk county as well. Wow what a difference as far as what you can get for your money! So much more property! Now looking at nassau houses is too depressing. The commutes gonna stink but I think we'll be primarily looking in Suffolk now!

Our next open house day we are going to check out West Islip...Nassau is INSANE

DH and I found the same thing, though we didn't look on LI. We bought in Putnam, but just like Nassau/Suffolk, there was a huge difference in what you could get. We couldn't have afforded our house if it was in Westchester.
Good luck! My brother and SIL live in Lindenhurst and they like it a lot.

I did the same thing several years ago and bought in Huntington Station (had lived in Oyster Bay). In addition to getting a better deal on my house, I find that my commute is far better because I'm actually closer to the LIE and Northern State.
