I am pumping exclusively. What can I do about a very sore breast?
All of a sudden I woke up in the middle of the night and my left breast (near my armpit) is soooooooooo sore. It feels bruised and engorged. I immediately pumped to try and get relief but it didn't help at all! I am massaging it while I pump and it is not helping. Has this happened to anyone? What can I do to make the pain stop?

This happened to me when my duct was clogged....once I pumped it felt better but it was very painful right near my armpiut and it felt like a huge knot...try to massage it in the shower maybe

You might want to call your doctor and talk to them, could be mastitis???

It could be a clogged duct, which could then lead to mastitis. I had a clogged duct at one point, this is what I did and it went away within a day or two.
Put a washcloth with warm water on it before pumping and massage the area during pumping.
Pump more often.
(For me I was also breastfeeding, in that case they also suggest varying the nursing position.)
If these things don't work after another day or so, or if you have a fever, call your doctor in case it is an infection!

Continue to pump and or nurse. Warm compresses and take a warm shower and let the water run on the sore area and try to express milk in the shower while massaging to relieve it. Check out this website KellyMom Lots of great information for Breast Feeding mothers Feel better!

I took a hot shower and it didn't help so I'm going in to see my Dr. at 1:45. I really hope it's something that goes away on it's own or with antibiotics.

This is all correct and it helped for me. i have gotten a few clogged ducts. Once i used the hot compress, massgaged and pumped it worked itself out. Good luck

I had that 2 days ago. My nipple was in shooting pain when I was massaging my breast. I kept massaging during the day between feeding and while BF. I let DS BF mostly on that breast.
It took 1 day to clear. I did not want a mastitis either.
Increase your water intake also.

What she said! Also, make sure you are drinking plenty of water/fluids.

Put a warm compress on it when you are pumping and massage the spot that hurts. I've had that happen and I just squeeze the clogged part while I nursed
