I also need flower/plant ideas for the front!

Here are some pictures of my house!

This is what I want:
1. Both sides of the stoop to look symmetrical
2. Do not want to block window
3. Nothing too bushy
4. A few things that will be alive in the winter so it is not completely bare
5. easy to take care of

I need suggestions on colors and names of plants & placement.
If anyone knows any designing websites I would like to hear those also!

we get sun there until about noon-1:00... then it is mostly shade for the rest of the day.
I want mostly flowers, but will do bushes that are small.

That's where we got most of our stuff today...

For shade I would defintiely say hostas, maybe some dwarf type bushes...

ETA- Also ornamental grasses...I saw some really pretty dwarf ones for shade today at Cheap Sams.

I did some research online b/c I was totally clueless when it came to gardening, but I found the best thing to do was to make a few trips to the nursery to look around and to see what is good for your area (for your case shade), and then decide on colors and sizes before you make your trip to purchase. You could do some hostas they have pretty little flowers if you cut them down towards the winter they come back next year..( they have all different kinds of hostas) Try lillies they are pretty too. You want to try to use perennials so they come back for you each year. Now or toward the fall you can plant mums they are pretty.. Or a hydranga they need ALOT of H2o though.. Just some ideas.. You could do something like Zebra grass it long grass that looks striped it stays all winter.. Good website lewisgardens.com

Azalea bushes are pretty too. I bought one last year and it needs virtually no maintenance. Hydrangeas would look great in front of your house. I also like the idea of zebr grass. I think you need some taller stuff.

Re: I also need flower/plant ideas for the front!

We just planted our flowerbed. I hate having sticks in the winter so we did a high number of evergreen vs. deciduous shrubs.

We planted several Dwarf Variegated Boxleaf Euonymus. External Image

A few of these to fill in the low areas, Cotoneaster, Tom Thumb. They're very compact.

One plant I love is the Burning Bush, Dwarf, Euonymus alatus compactus. External Image They look great in the fall and are pretty easy to care for. I plan on getting these, we aren't quite done planting yet.

A I have one of these, Soft Touch Compact Holly, but may get another, They really are nice to touch.

We planted golden euonymus and a dwarf burning bush also.

I thnk the most important thing is to try to get a mix of different things so your beds will have color year round.

Re: I also need flower/plant ideas for the front!

I just wanted to add that your house is already so nice; you are going to have a knockout place with all your new plants done!

Also, a neighbor suggested I have a nursery come out and do a plan. They usually charge between $25-$75 to do a drawing. Then they can do all, some or none of the work, but you have an idea of what to plant and where. You might end up saving money if your plants live rather than planting the wrong plants and having them die.

Of course, I wanted to get going on my beds and didn't do this, but its good advice. I did to the aide at the nursery and he helped me pick out what to get.

Thanks for the ideas!
My aunt used to work at a nursery so I am going to ask her for help also.
I will post after pics when I am done, but that might not be for a while!

Re: I also need flower/plant ideas for the front!

We just landscaped the front of our house.
We put Emerald Gaiety Euonymus. It's an evergreen, just watch the size you buy but you can prune it.
External Image

We put Crimson Pygmy Barberry which stay pretty small but you can prune.
External Image

I have a small Azalea which blooms in the Spring. Mine are lavender. External Image

hydrangea which bloom Summer to Fall. Again, watch the size of the one you're buying.

Those are all perennials.
I also put some annuals all along the border because they usually bloom much longer than perennials.
Good luck!
