Hypothetical work situation, which would you choose?

I am in the middle of trying to decide on a business adventure and was wondering what all the mommies here would do....

A-Buy a business closer to home and DC's daycare (10 min away) that needs to be updated and worked harder to get out of the trenches.....plenty of current staff who know more about the biz than I do.

B-Buy a higher end business that needs hardly any work but is an hour commute. No staff, therefore, no leaving whenever, need to hire a few good people.

Both would cost approximately the same $$$$.

Without going into further details, which would you choose?

Me? I would do A. First for the convenience. Second because putting my own sweat equity into it would really make it seem more 'MINE'.

"A" because you can make it your own, you have the employee help, and it's location is much more convenient and therefore less stressful for you! GL! Chat Icon

A - if you know that you can pull it out of the trenches than you will only have to work harder in the beginning and then once everything is established you'll still have the benefit of being so close to home.

Do you think you can take A out of the trenches? If it was because of bad management and not the market/location, then A is the way to go. You could learn so much from the employees. It's a bit scary but the convenience is key in operating a business.

i agree! i think it depends on how "deep" in the trenches business A is, and how it got there. was it just because of bad owner/management, or because the area its in dosen't support it?
if it would be easy to build back up, i would definitely do that- especially with a baby, its nice to be close to home!

Re: Hypothetical work situation, which would you choose?

A sounds better to me - it sounds like when you get it up and running well, you might have the opportunity to have it run itself with the employees that are there. It also provides you with back up if DC gets sick or something (or if you want to have more DC).

I am in the process of getting my own store opened and I would be the only one working there - and the two things listed above are what make me nervous since to start out with I wouldn't have any employees.

FM if you want to chat!

Thanks!
I was leaning toward A only because I am sure being an hour away will come back to bite me in the butt, and even though it's not helping my bottom line, in other ways it's important....
