Hybrid cars - Used or New?

Can you guys tell me about hybrid cars? Is it worth it to get one due to the gas prices on the rise? Do you really save that much in gas?

Is it better to get one new or used? Is it a lot more expensive than a regular car?

Thanks!

Re: Hybrid cars - Used or New?

I LOVE my Toyota Prius!

We're a little over halfway on our lease. When the lease is up, we're planning on getting another one. We looked at the Honda Insight and the Prius. Toyota offered us more features for the same price as the Honda. I'm so glad we went for the Prius b/c the Honda doesn't qualify for the Clean Pass to drive in the HOV lane, which ended up being important to us since we now use the LIE every day.

As for gas mileage, for everyday driving, we average 45 mpg. If we can coast on the highway and maintain a speed, we can get over 50. It also doesn't take more than 11 gallons of gas when empty (closer to 10). We fill up every other week. Yesterday, I was on E and was in a rush so I only put $10 in at $3.95/g and that will last me at least through the weekend, if not part of next week!

Between the gas mileage and the HOV privileges, I can't rave about the Prius enough.

As for the price, not sure how much it is to buy but to lease was not expensive at all. DH's car crapped out suddenly so we were unexpectedly in the market for a new car when we leased. We looked at the Nissan Altima, Honda Civic, and Toyota Corolla as well. The Prius was slightly more money, only by a couple of thousand, but when we compared how much we'd save in gas to the cost of the car, it was a no brainer.

Re: Hybrid cars - Used or New?

We just purchased a 2012 Mazda 3 SkyActive. While I don't think it is considered a hybrid car, it does get about 40 miles to the gallon. It is a new addition to their motors, but the reviews thus far have been great.

The price between the SkyActive Mazda and non, was about $2,000. For us, with DH traveling to Harlem at least 2x a week, it was easy to choose.

Hope that helps! Good luck!

I love my civic hybrid and have had it for 4 years now. I don't know if it's worth it if you don't do a lot of highway driving though. Highway I average about 50 mpg, city is a few mpg lower. I also looove the cleanpass for the hov lane!

Re: Hybrid cars - Used or New?

Love my Prius!!!!!! Just got a brand new one for 25K. I was looking at a 2010 for 20K and decided to go new. I am averaging 50 miles to the gallon. I drive to and from Queens to Centereach every day and only fill up once a week. It is awesome!!! Today I put my clean pass stickers on. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

It's still great but I find I get better gas mileage by going a consistent speed without having to really hit the gas. A lot of hybrid drivers get better gas mileage in stop and go traffic. I think it's the way I drive as I have a bit of a lead foot. Chat Icon Chat Icon
