Thoughts on this case and decision?

I remember feeling that something was very off with the father and all the details. I didn't think the accused guy was guilty but assumed the DNA would be clear cut .

I think so many people have so many opinions on this; that I am not surprised it came to this.

I honesty don't have much of an opinion of who did it. Do I think the father did it? No, I don't.

But as far as any other person including the accuser or if it was a set up.... I just don't know. It's just all so sad.

I felt he was guilty based on evidence that was made public (not just the dna), and speaking to detectives close to the investigation. I'm glad they are keeping him locked up until retrial.

I wasn't in the courtroom, so it isn't totally fair to judge. But I can't help but question the timing. They only deliberated for a day and a half? And right before the holiday?

Would a judge ordinarily call a mistrial after such a short period of time?

I think if there is one juror who says they are absolutely 100% never going to change their mind—then yes.

Hung Jury in Murder Trial of Jogger Karina Vetrano

From what I’ve read, I think this is a disgrace. The guy confessed and they found his DNA on the victim. What more do the jurors want? Of course, I wasn’t in the courtroom, so I’m not sure if I’m missing something.

You have a point.

But why are so many people so adamant that this kid DID NOT do it even with DNA there?????? A million fingers are pointed at everyone else except this kid that It makes no sense.

Do they know something else?? It almost makes you question it.

I was blown away. I am wondering what his attorney said/did to create a theory of reasonable doubt. The jury wasn't even close! It was 7-5. The news has been so focused on talking about the horrific testimony of the dad that it seemed to lose sight of all the other details that should have been reported because this makes no sense.

Either way, so sad for her family.

I agree... I’m shocked by this. I thought this would be an open-shut case. How did the defense bring enough reasonable doubt to this that 5 of the 12 could not find him guilty?! It just has me shaking my head in disgust.

Hung Jury in Murder Trial of Jogger Karina Vetrano

Something was fishy about this case from day 1. I’m not surprised that it was a mistrial.

I honestly think the “make a murder” on Netflix shows that a confession and DNA doesn’t automatically show proof.

But I’ll say I know nothing about this case, I remember it happening but I never followed it. I’m curious how he went from confessing with many details to pleading not guilty.

I’m also curious, since that article had no real details, who did they place blame on to show reasonable doubt?

The article claims the defense argued that the confession was under duress, corrupted crime scene (her father found her, ran to her and hugged her or lifted her up), there was minimal DNA evidence and an overall rush to judgement by police to convict the accused.

Such BS
What parent wouldn't hug their lifeless child?
DNA is DNA - they found his under her finger nails
Rush to judgement? They found the guy 6 months later by tracing the DNA they discovered.

How is this case cut and dry?

Either we aren't getting the entire truth or 5 jury members are on drugs.

So horrible. Prayers for this girl and her family.

So how are they claiming his DNA got under her nails? Was it planted there by the cops like OJ? Chat Icon
Seriously how does dna of a complete random stranger get under someone's nails???

This was my immediate reaction.

Something seems fishy about the timing.
I don't ever recall a hung jury being declared after such a short period of time.

I work for the court system and no - this judge should not have declared a mistrial on a day and half. That is not the norm nor should any judge do that. That is the fishy part of this whole thing to me.

I agree there is more to this. I remember reading that the suspect is mentally impaired and think he may have been put up to this, not understanding his actions.

I don't think the family had anything to do with it, though I have to say I think their reaction is odd. There is a wikipedia page for the murder. That is bizarre to me.

There was so much wrong about this case from the get go. No way would I disturb a crime scene. I think her father was former law enforcement so he should know better. This was nearly a split jury so it was not a cut and dry case.

EXACTLY!
The defense in this case was super strong. The prosecution did not do enough to show that NO ONE ELSE beyond a reasonable doubt could have done this. There was doubt in the minds of the jurors with the method of interrogation and mental capacity of the accused.

Lawyers, help me out What is the official lingo or idea I'm getting at here?

It's definitely him. We know that, but remember that jurors have to go only on the evidence presented in court. In this case, the defense was strong. Prosecution may have thought that the DNA was a slam-dunk, but it looks like it wasn't.

I doubt they created the Wikipedia page. There are a ton of Wiki pages for random murders, kidnappings, etc.
