How to tell your tenant that their girlfriend is, er...making lots of noises?

DH and I have a two-family house. We rent the upstairs out.

The tenant upstairs is awesome. No real problems, except for her new girlfriend who is VERY LOUD during their sexytime.

It wouldn't be so terrible if she wasn't on a completely different schedule than DH and I. We're 9-5ers, for the most part, whereas she's a 4-midnight person. So, things get frisky up there at like, 3-4 a.m.

It's been on-and-off for the past three weeks or so...and I sleep like a rock, but it's waking me up. It goes on for like an hour at a time. Her bedroom is right above our's.

I really don't know the proper way to address the situation...most communication between us and her is via text...any ideas?

Wow good luck

I'm thinking about how I would feel on the receiving side of that.

Haha, I know. I mean, part of me would be embarrassed but the cocky part of me would be like "yeah, I'm goooooood"

But that's just me.

I guess maybe approach it as "lots of noises" instead of "insanely long and probably fake moans and groans and screams" would be the way to go...

I'd probably wake up at 7 AM and have really raucous sex so they know what it's like. Chat Icon

I like this response! Or better yet, wake up when they do, and see who can be louder!Chat Icon

Anywho....I wouldn't bring up sex noise as the point of conversation; just ask them to keep the noise to a minimum during the 3-4am hours as you are waking in a few hours for work.

Ouch thats tough. Chat Icon

I would maybe send her a funny text just to let her know that you can hear them loud and clear.

Something like "I was going to come up this morning to check on that leaky faucet but it sounded like you had a long nightChat Icon "

Maybe she will get the message.

I would probably turn the tv on so I couldn't hear them. Maybe turn the radio way up when u hear it so they get the hint, I don't think I could directly say something though.

When you are woken up by them, just text Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! right then & there. They won't see it untill later, but they should get the point. Chat Icon

ughhh i live in an apt bldg with thin walls and this is my worst nightmare (being heard) especially since my next door neighbor's bedroom is up against ours and she is my BFF's cousinChat Icon

I mean, even if you arentChat Icon and they can hear you don't they realize the opposite is also true? maybe they don't care in the heat of the moment but i'm pretty self concious about that stuff!Chat Icon

wow! how can they not realize that you can hear them? Unless they really just don't care! I would tell her that you understand she works night hours, but that you would appreciate her keeping the noise down until at least 7 am, as you work normal day hours. She should comply, especially since you are her landlord.
