I have read up to 5 hours for refrigerated and 8-10 if it's never been refrigerated. You can usually tell when it's starting to turn, it gets like little flakes almost before it really turns.

Re: How long does breast milk stay good after you pump?

It is good for about 4 hours at room temperature, 4 days in the fridge (although I've gone up to 6 days with no problems) & 4 months in the regular freezer. If you take it out, of the fridge, I wouldn't let it sit out for more than 4 hours before using it.

When in doubt, you can always smell the milk. Trust me, if it's spoiled it's usually pretty obvious. I usually go by if it smells okay, it's okay to use.

The flakes do not necessarilt mean it is bad... when it gets cold it will get slightly flakey as the fats solidify... you are better to go by smell which is definitely a key factor
From Kellymom.com:

Storage guidelines
HUMAN MILK STORAGE - QUICK REFERENCE CARD
Temperature Storage Time
Freshly expressed milk
Warm room 79°F / 25°C 4-6 hours
Room temperature 66-72°F / 19-22°C 10 hours
Insulated cooler / icepacks 60°F / 15°C 24 hours
Refrigerated Milk (Store at back, away from door)
Refrigerator (fresh milk) 32-39°F / 0-4°C 8 days
Refrigerator (thawed milk) 32-39°F / 0-4°C 24 hours
Frozen Milk (Do not refreeze! Store at back, away from door/sides)
Freezer compartment
inside refrigerator (older-style) Varies 2 weeks
Self-contained freezer unit
of a refrigerator/freezer Varies 3-6 months
Separate deep freeze 0°F / 19°C 6-12 months
These guidelines are for milk expressed for a full-term healthy baby.
If baby is seriously ill and/or hospitalized, discuss storage guidelines with baby’s doctor.

To avoid waste and for easier thawing & warming, store milk in 1-4 ounce portions. Date milk before storing. Milk from different pumping sessions/days may be combined in one container – use the date of the first milk expressed.

Breastmilk is not spoiled unless it smells really bad or tastes sour.

To thaw milk

Thaw slowly in the refrigerator (this takes about 12 hours – try putting it in the fridge the night before you need it). Avoid letting milk sit out at room temperature to thaw.
For quicker thawing, hold container under running water - start cool and gradually increase temperature.
Previously frozen milk may be kept in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours after it has finished thawing. Do not refreeze.

To warm milk

Heat water in a cup or other small container, then place frozen milk in the water to warm; or
Use a bottle warmer.
NEVER microwave human milk or heat it directly on the stove.
The cream will rise to the top of the milk during storage. Gently swirl milk (do not shake) to mix before checking temperature and offering to baby.

If baby does not finish milk at one feeding, it may be refrigerated and offered at the next feeding before it is discarded.

eta: I only pumped for 10 months and always used this guideline.. i can tell you that if you are only pumping i found it was not worth it to freeze if you had a system of rotating since it is good in the fridge for 8 days... i used to freeze and i found the frozen milk never really was as good and some nutrients do siminish when frozen

Re: How long does breast milk stay good after you pump?

whenever i took it out and put it back in the fridge i would typically use it for the next feeding or for his cereal.... it really is good for up to 6 hours so if you take it out and warm it up (i used a warmer) then it takes an hour to feed and you put it back in the fridge then the next feeding i would use it again (add alittle if needed but not too much) and then leave it out for no more then 2 hours....

When DD doesn't finish a bottle of pumped BM, we discard it an hour later. It's painful for the unused milk to go to waste. I'm curious as well if I can leave it out longer!

I used to do the same thing but not with fresh pumped.. only with warmed up from the fridge milk.. You def do not have to discard fresh pumped milk if they dont finish it.. That I always put back in the fridge.. Its the already warmed up one I am confused about and if I can warm it 2x?? Thanks Alex for responding to this for us!!! Chat Icon

Re: How long does breast milk stay good after you pump?

I always rewarmed my bottles since ds was like goldielocks and needed his bottle just right :) i would always rewarm without an issue... i never threw out anything because ds drank so much that i couldnt waste an ounce...

another great thing that i did learn was that if you dc likes warmed bottles and you are going out, warm the bottle, wrap it in a paper towel and bring it along.. it is good for several hours warm and it is alot easier then trying to find a way to warm it once you were out.... ds was a nightmare when he was very young and there would be a switch that just set him into i am hungry mode and he needed that bottle then (which is why i invested in a warmer for his rrom that had a cooling station as well, apparently the trip down the stairs was too long for him)
