How do you apply for STAR??
and exactly what is it??
We have officially bought our house now and they told us to apply for the Star exemption
can someone explain whjat I need to do?

Google star exemption new york. There is an application that you need to fill out. Fill out the application and call the town where you house is. Even though I missed the deadline to file the town of islip told me to fax a copy of my deed with a copy of the application and they would take care of it. The Star exemption can save you about 1000 a year on school taxes. Also you may already have it from the previous owners this will allow you to keep it for next year.

Is it true applying for the STAR program can open a can of worms if there are things not up to town code with a home????

I never heard of this before. However, my house was new, so there was nothing to hide.
