Home Buying Process

When you were looking to get preapproved and seeking out the rates, How did you go about doing this?

I am confused as to whether or not to use a broker.

Re: Home Buying Process

We called one mortgage broker and got a preapproval and then a GFE (good faith estimate of closing costs). The mortgage brokers fees on the GFE were ridiculous!

We decided to shop around and go into a bank and got a much better deal (no closing costs, no fees, no PMI, etc).

Re: Home Buying Process

I used a Broker, just cuz it was easy for us. I have used him 3 times now. WHen I first purchased house #1, refinance and house #2.

I have heard though, you may be better off doing it yourself, it truly just came down to conveinence for us. We wound up with Wells Fargo, you may want to try that on your own first.

Re: Home Buying Process

We used a broker but I wish we would have went with a bank. I think we could have gotten a better rate. It was someone I know and I although I didn't pay any hidden fees I think the rate he got us was the best rate he could get not necessary the best one out there.

Re: Home Buying Process

We used a broker and were content that we did. That doesn't mean we didn't do our homework as well though. We found a lower rate online at a different than my broker had found for us. We told the broker we wanted this rate and they negotiated it with the bank they had gotten us the original rate with.

Also, don't avoid using a broker because you think there may be hidden fees. We didn't pay any fees. In fact, because we used a broker recommended by our realtor, we actually saved a lot of money because of bundled services.
