in 4th grade i relate it to hannah montant and ask what the main idea is- she leads a double life. then talk about the facts and how we know that is the main idea- 2 different names, wears a wig, etc.
not sure if this can help

With really little ones, maybe you could start out with just a picture. Let's say there's a picture of kids playing at the park. You could ask them for the details they see in the picture, such as a boy going down a slide, a girl swinging, children running around. Write all those down around the outside of a web. Then, once they've noticed all the details, you could ask them what they think the main idea of the picture is (children are playing at a park). When they figure that out, it goes on the inside of the web. If you do that with a couple of pictures, they'll have an idea of what main idea and details are. Then, if you read an easy picture book with them that has an obvious main idea (maybe Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon?), you could show them the main idea graphic organizer of the house with the roof. The main idea is the roof of the house and the details are the slats that hold the roof up. For some kids, I find they like writing the main idea first and others like working from the details up to the main idea roof. Either way, it gives them a visual to hold onto as they are doing their own reading and trying to figure out the main idea.
HTH!

I used to cut pictures out of a magazine and have the kids write a headline, which would be the main idea...

I teach first grade and I teach them that main idea is simply about "who" and "what"

Who is the story (mostly) about?
What is the character doing (or what happened to the character)

I think supporting details can be tackled on a basic level when reading non-fiction

hope that helps :)

in first grade, I taught them that the main idea is what the story or picture is mostly about
