Hip Dysplasia?

DD just had her 4 month check up and the Dr. heard her hip clicking. He wants us to get an xray done. He said he's optimistic because she had good range when he rotates her thighs and she's not in pain but she was breech so he wants to take precautions. If she does have it how immobile will she be? She just started to roll over. Will she still be able to and will she be able to crawl if she has to wear that harness? He also mentioned a partial hip dysplasia - would she still have to wear a harness or do they do something else? My heart is just breaking for her. I'm taking her to North Shore Hospital in Manhasset. Anyone been there? Sorry for all the questions. Thank you!

Also, she just started the exersaucer - do you think that could of had something to do with it since the Dr. had never heard the clicking before?

OK - DD was also breech - and hip dysplasia is very common in breech babies b/c of the way they are positioned in the uterus. When DD was born, her ped checked her hips and thought that there was a chance that she might have had it - so at 5 days old, were were at the othopedist. And sure enough, she had it in her left hip. She did have to wear a pavlic harness for 20hrs a day for 8 weeks. Now being that she was a newborn, she didn't even know she had it on. It did correct the problem and now she is just fine. We actually have her 1yr appt at the ortho later this month.

Now, just b/c your doctor felt clicking does not mean that your DC has hip dysplasia. It could very well be a tendon. Hopefully this is the case. Worst case, yes, your DC will have to wear a harness. I will not lie, it is restrictive. It basically holds their legs out to the sides - kind of like a frog. It does have little boots that velcro to their feet and straps that go over the shoulders and around their mid-section. I always said that DD looked like she was going parachuting Chat Icon You can google PAVLIC harness to see what it looks like. Trust me - it looks MUCH WORSE than it is. It is very soft and causes the child NO PAIN at all. The purpose is to hold the hips closer to the socket so they can grow to where they need to be. Hip Dysplasia is basically to much space between the ball & socket of the hip and if it is not corrected it could cause problems down the road with walking, etc.

I hope I have not frightened you to death. It is a very fixable problem. Like I said, hopefully your DC does not have it. Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have!!! Hope I helped you a littleChat Icon

DS had the xray but they told us immediately that he was fine. I worried, but try not to until after the sono or xray. Chat Icon

Re: Hip Dysplasia?

We knew dd had hip displasia the day she was born. Our ped knew she was breech for so long they did a sono a few hours after she was born. She has it in both hips. She wore a harness for 8 weeks and it corrected the left hip the right hip 8months later is still coming out of the stocked. She is wearing a difference brace now. She wears it for 16hrs a day we put it on for bedtime. The ortho told us the jumperoo is fine for her to go in. She's crawling and standing and even takes steps when you hold her hands. You would never know she has something wrong with her hips. She is in no pain. My dd's case is more server then others so that's why this is an on going thing for us. We have a few more months of this new brace and I'm praying it works for her. If you search my name and hip displasia you will see a lot of moms on here had this with there DC and they were fine after the 8 weeks. If you have any questions please fm me Chat Icon

Re: Hip Dysplasia?

DD was born with this too and was in the harness for 6 or 7 weeks-it fixed the problem, we just had her 2.5 year checkup with the pediatric orthopedic and all is great.

Your DC is so small, I doubt it will bother her-it bothered me way more than it bothered DD. And, that's if she even needs it, she may be just fineChat Icon
