Help! Who do you cut - or don't you (BDay Party)

DD's 3rd birthday is coming up. We are doing a backyard bbq like we did for her 1st 2. We always start out saying its going to be simple and then the list grows. Well this year the list ends up having 40 adults and 24 kidsChat Icon . This is going to cost an arm and a leg on top of the fact that I am getting really stressed out about planning. So DH and I start arguing last night because he added one more family and i got nasty. More of a vent for me than anything.

Anyway, so my question is - how do you make up a childs birthday list? And how many people do you usually have? How do you make the cut? We/she is blessed to have lots of friends and some family and I really can't see not inviting anyone. I tried to stick to family and the kids she plays with and talks about. Is this insane or is it me just worrying too much? What will she expect for her sweet 16!!!!! And when she starts school there is going to be even more kids!

Not sure.. but bright side, as they get older the parties are usually just kids and no longer adults.. at least thats how my family does it.

I've had the same issue for two years. My solution is to just go with it. Considering many who you invite will not be able to attend, your guest list will diminish based on the natural course of things. Don't get yourself crazy. I had a backyard BBQ style party for Amber last year and I still hear raves about it from parents because it wasn't rushed or hetic like the party places tend to be. I'm following the same formula this year as well.

BBQ's give everyone a chance to mingle, etc. And you don't have to go overboard on the food, etc. Ask family members if they would like to bring a dish (make the suggestion complimentary like "Hey Aunt Mary! Everyone RAVES about your Ziti. Any chance you could bring a dish of it to the party?". Chat Icon

I agree with this as well.

We are in the same situation as you are. We have a very large group of close friends--all of whom have children (usually multiple kids)--and we have three siblings together and eight more kids. We are lucky that our DDs b-days are in September and May, so we've always had them outside, but what if it rains? We don't have a finished basement and that many kids would be a disaster!

We just had my DDs 2nd b-day party on Saturday and this year I decided to just invite the immediates and any of my friends who had a 2007 baby--that equaled 4 couples and TEN kids as it was (plus the families, of course: 18 more people). It was great because it was drastically reduced, but in the end, someone slipped up and said, "See ya Saturday, buddy..." to someone who wasn't on the guest list. Chat Icon

In September for my older DDs 4th I think I'm going to have an early party at a kids' place for her "real" friends and then later that afternoon a family party.

DH said yesterday, "The worst part of being a parent is planning these freakin' parties!" Chat Icon

ugh I feel the same way...Our "small" BBQ this yr came to 36 adults and 28 kids! And that was almsot all immediate family b/c DH has a large family. I this year excluding some of his aunts and uncles that dont have kids. He wanted them, but there is no reason for it. I cant wait till kid only parties.

I don't plan on having family every year at DD's party - she has so many friends and that will be the focus of her parties in years to come.

We usually only do pizza & ice cream for immediate family for all of the kids anyway so that tends to help (immediate family being siblings, first cousins & grandparents)

I feel your pain, DH and I both have HUGE families.....last year for DS 1st bday we ended having 80 people and seriously.....it was just Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and grandparents with like 10 friends. Anyway, it was out of hand. This year so no one gets offended we are doing immediate family and grandparents only and like 5 moms with their kids so DS has "friends" at his party.

For Jeremy's 2nd Birthday party, we only invited kids within a year or 2 of his age (we wanted an age appropriate party), except for our very best friends. This even meant not inviting the older sibling in some instances. We felt that there was no reason to have a 7 year old at a 2yo's gym party! It certainly helped to slightly keep the list down. Of course, we had it at a gym place. If I was invited to your house, I'm not sure I would understand why my other child couldn't come too Chat Icon
