*HELP* Need advice on what to do!! (sorry a little long)

So DH's sister got married on Wed, at City Hall. She and her new DH are honeymooning in Las Vegas for a few days and are having a dinner to celebrate on Sunday. It was my understanding that it was dinner, to start at 5pm.

I just found out from my other SIL that the dinner is like a reception, and it's going to be 4 1/2 to 5 hrs long! So that is 5pm - 9:30/10pm Chat Icon

My issue and where I need help is....
Troy is almost 17 mos old- his usual bed time is 7pm. Does anyone have ANY suggestions on what we should do?????

1-I had thought about having someone come to the party and take Troy to stay over their house and sleep while we stay at the party, but I don't know anyone (that wont be at the dinner) who can do this. Add to it the party is going to be in Forest Hills and we live in Riverhead!

2-Thought (VERY briefly) about not taking Troy, but MIL (among others) would be VERY upset and we would NOT hear the end of it.

I want to take Troy, and I want us to have a good time. Our niece (who is 21 mos) will be there, but her bed time is 8pm.
I know Troy will not sleep there, not even in the stroller.

ANY suggestions?????

I think we may just have to suck it up and deal with however he is. Oh, the SIL who just got married said to my other SIL that she feels bad, and hopes that at least we can stay for the cake cutting.

(Note: I have no family here to help us out)

Honestly, if it was us, we'd just wing it. Christopher does pretty well in restaurants, but bring a lot of snacks, milk and get the little Wheel Pals if he likes trucks b/c they are great in restaurantsChat Icon Chat Icon

Do you have friends who can babysit. If so, I would opt on not taking him (who cares what your MIL says - she won't be the one taking care of him)

If that's not an option then take him. Change him into his pjs there. Maybe even call ahead and see if there is a place you can put a pack and play - just in case he falls asleep. Then you - and other family members can take turns keeping an eye on him.

ETA: You can leave early if he gets super cranky. No one will blame you.

Thanks Kate, but the party is in Queens (Forest Hills).

I underestimate him sometimes and he may be good- but I try to prepare for the worst!

I'll have to see if I can get the Little Wheel Pals!

I'd probably take him and stay as long as he isn't being really difficult. DS's usual bedtime is around 7PM too. I would take him, knowing he could probably last until 8-8:30 and then he would pass out in the car on the way home. I think it's unreasonable for anyone to expect you to bring Troy AND stay until the bitter end.

I think people forget what it was like to have a child that age and how important a schedule is for everyone to be happy and well rested. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have one person I can call and see if she can pick up Troy around his bedtime, but it's such short notice.

If that's not an option then take him. Change him into his pjs there. Maybe even call ahead and see if there is a place you can put a pack and play - just in case he falls asleep. Then you - and other family members can take turns keeping an eye on him. Supposedly they are closing the restaurant for this party- I'll call them and see if this is something we can do.

Thank you!! Sometimes I need to "talk things out"

Yea, MIL had 3 kids, and you'd swear she never had even one on the things she says/does with her two grandkids!

Also, SIL (the one who just got married) has no kids. I'm sorry, if this were at a reception hall, I'd have had someone meet us at the hall- no doubt- and take him home. PS, we were only told of this party within the last 1 1/2 weeks

I just saw these at Target recently and thought they were really cute, but DS is still a bit young for them. Maybe I will go back and get them and put them away for later. Chat Icon

I would bring him. Then I would feel my DS out as to when I had to leave. If he fell asleep in his stroller then I would be good. If he was overstimulated and overtired. I would leave early. no matter who got upset.
HAVE FUN!!!!

I would go, bring him with you. Bring his Pjs, a blanket, or whatever else he needs to sleep, and when it gets to be near the time when he has "HAD IT" and NEEDS to leave, change him into his PJs, and take him home.
