Help-Experiance with Young Puppies

My Bella is only 10-weeks old and this weekend I started to take her outside on the deck so she can get used to going to the bathroom outside. Well it does not seem to be working, she freaks out, runs in between my legs and will not move. I put a leash on her and walk her around with me, she will not go in front of me and walks behind and just stops. I am sure she is scared, but my question is, do I keep doing this everyday and she will eventually start going?

As soon as we get in the house, of course she go's to the bathroom Chat Icon

Does anyone have experience with this and what did you do or what am I doing wrong?

DH is going to build a dog runner outside once she gets all her shots, but for now I really can not leave her out there alone.

Is she ok with the leash inside? Sounds to me like she just might be afraid of the leash.

I tried that also, I took it off while she was on the deck, let her run around a little on her own, but still she would run between my legs and sit her little butt on my sneaker Chat Icon

Re: Help-Experiance with Young Puppies

Try walking the dog on the leash in the house so he gets used to the leash.

Do you have any books on training your puppy? There are lots of methods out there, you just need to chose which one is right for you.

i think she just needs to get used to being outside. give her a couple of treats while standing out there but make sure you do not reward her for being nervous. Look for signs that she is ok, tail between the legs is nervous, tail straight out is content.

Also, its hard in the winter but you might be out there for a while, waiting for her to go to the bathroom. nce she does priase her! If you are out there more than 30 minutes and she hasnt gone, bring her right back inside and directly into her cage. Her cage should not be big enough for her to go to the bathroom in. Wait a couple of minutes, bring her right back outside.

It will happen. Its just consistency and constantly taking her outside. After every activity. Waking up, playing, eating, etc.

Good luck!

Re: Help-Experiance with Young Puppies

She is probably afraid of outside...bring some of her toys out there with her and play with her off leash....let her get used to the leash inside.
As Denise said...be consistent and don't give her anywhere to go to the bathroom in the house...you want her to learn to go outside and only outside.

Good luck!

Young pups are often not happy with the leash, don't want to or won't walk with it, will bite it, hate it, etc. I read alot about this. When you are home and watching her, leave the leash on her so she can get used to it and drag it for a little while. But make sure you are watching. Point is for them to get used to it. The walking with it will become gradual. Everything will take time. They are afraid, they are babies and it could take many months overall to train them.

And don't ever leave her outside alone, even when she gets her shots, as a pup esp. The point of doing their business outside is just that, to go and come back in. Not be left outside so you don't know what she did, and then she never learns the right way. So always surpervise and if she doesn't go in a few mins, come back in and try again in another 10 mins or so.

Ok you are learning too. It is new to you and you can't expect to know it all, so don't worry you are doing something wrong.

So here is the thing. When they go in the house, you immediately run them outside. Right now she is too small to really be able to hold it, but as she gets older (4 mths supposedly they have decent bladder control) she WILL know if you consistently take her out when she goes pee in the house. Even round the clock in the beginning, take her out around 4am b/c pups cannot hold it through the night.

Use a command such as Pee pee. Go pee pee. Go potty. Then praise when she goes "good potty!" and maybe a small treat too. If you consistently do this, she will learn. When you are home, take her outside every hour or two and use command, then praise. Then eventually you will space it out more, like every 3 hours, then every 5 hours etc. They are very smart and will learn if you are consistent. And with her as your dog, you will learn her habits.

I didn't know what to do with my first dog. But after a couple of weeks I really got it and understood what to do to get my doggie properly trained. Both my dogs never ever pee or have accidents in my house. We take our dogs out, as adults now, about every 7-8.5 hours. But as pups, it was every couple of hours when we were home.

Great advice. Thanks everyone! Chat Icon

I know it's a learning process for both of us.

I would never leave her outside alone, I was referring to leaving her in the pen, standing out there with her, but just letting her have her own space and spot to get used to.

Oh, I get it. As long as you are supervising and you can see what she does, that would be fine but if you would like to walk her on a leash, then she has to get used to it now. So as frustrating as it is, it will take time but she will get it.

Did you buy any books about puppies? I bought some that were really helpful re training, etc.

Re: Help-Experiance with Young Puppies

We got Riley at 6wks old and from day brought her outside to potty.
We did not put her on a leash right away b/c she was small and couldn't run away from us.
When we did start using the leash, in the begining she freaked out...did not like it one bit. (we used it while teaching her how to walk)
It took several times and now she is wonderful on the leash...we can go for walks with no problems.

also while on the leash, you don't want her to walk ahead of you...always beside you....I would just keep working on it....sounds like she is unsure of it...when she does go behind you...I would immediately put her in a sit position beside you and make her wait for a few seconds...then continue with the walk. This way she learns that you are controling the walk, not her!

Good luck...and it will get easier.

I would also suggest bringing her to the spot that you are going to make the run. THis way she gets used to this spot. If you can leash walk her, just keep walking back and forth in this spot....she'll get the idea.

Re: Help-Experiance with Young Puppies

We got Abby when she was five months old. She was petrified of being outside and would run in. Thing is - she wouldn't pee on the wee wee pads - but on my dining room rug. I was borderline going to lose my mind for awhile.

We just kept getting her out there - all day long - and I literally stalked her all day to make sure she wouldn't pee in the house. It was exhusting.

Even now - she def. still has accidents in the house but they are becoming less and less with everyday.

Just, keep an eye on her - and be consistent. I say "Go potty" about 100 times a day. Or "Good poopy" if she poops.

This makes me feel better (not that I am happy you dealt with this) but knowing we are not the only ones, It's very frustrating and I feel your pain. She seems to hate to go on the wee wee pad also and always goes about 5 inches from it, on the rug. I am sure it's going to get much easier and she will do it less and less.

Whenever she is out of the crate, I stalk her also, watch her every move - LOL. I close the doors to the den where her crate is and let her roam around, the TV is in there also so it's the room we are in the most. Once I see that little azz go down I grab her and put her on the pad.

It's good that you're doing this now.
We trained Iggy to go on the wee wee pads and now we're tring to get him to go outsideChat Icon

We bring him out around the time that he usually has to poop.

It might help if you put her wee wee pad outside where you want her to go.

Re: Help-Experiance with Young Puppies

I say if you don't want to deal with wee wee pads, then don't even start using them. We never used them and glad we didn't. Doggies learned very fast. It is very hard to unteach a doggie once you allow them to go in the house (on papers/pads).

And while you are at PetCo -- there is a spray that is supposed to help train your dog where to "go".

I know Diana's neighbor has this spray too.....I know this cuz I went to drop it off at her house one day, but actually left it in the neighbor's mailbox!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

That is the issue I am having. I did not want to start with the wee wee pads at all, but DH and I both work full time jobs and I was trying to find the best method for her, also being the weather is so cold, she is afraid, she wont go outside and we don't have the time to stand out there for 2-hours with her everyday in the AM Chat Icon. I am trying to take her out still every day, a few times a day just to get her used to it at least, but again she just wont go right now and I am hoping this will change. In the meantime I feel I have no choice but to use the pads, as much as I HATE them

Re: Help-Experiance with Young Puppies

You should just keep her in the crate when you aren't home....with a tiny bit of water (I used to use the water bottle like for a rabbit) and just put a weewee pad in the corner of the crate.

Take her outside and play with her...bring her toys out there with you.
You have to teach her that outside is fun...expecially since you have such great weather right now. She will go to the bathroom...
