Help a Gentile out! Bat mitzvah question...

We have been invited to our first bat mitzvah. It's tomorrow night. The invitation reads:
With joy in our hearts
We invite you to celebrate with us
The Bat Mitzvah of our daughter
xxx
The date
At half past seven in the evening
The location

So...is this supposed to indicate some kind of ceremony or is it just a party? It seems kind of late for both, especially for a Thursday. Chat Icon I'm just trying to figure out babysitting times. Eta: and also to ascertain if we need to be there exactly at 7:30 or is it OK we get there a bit late by 20 minutes.

Also, what's the gift protocol? We need to give a substantial gift as it's for the daughter of one of DH's top clients...but isn't there a symbolic amount in Jewish tradition?

Thank you SO much!

Sounds like you were invited to the party but get out of going to the service. The service is not the most exciting event in the world, so consider yourselves lucky Chat Icon

18 is a "lucky" number in Jewish tradition, so any multiple of 18 works.

Is it at a temple? I'm thinking it could be a ceremony? is it possible?

Multiples of 18. I gave $180 for the last one I went to an felt it was generous but I have heard of people giving much less and much more.

Where is it? If it's at a temple, my guess is that you're also invited to the service. As other posters said, multiples of 18 or 120.

Thanks, ladies! It's at a country club, so I'm guessing no ceremony then?

You may or may not have the ceremony but at 7:30 at night I am leaning towards no. I would wear fancy clothing (knee length) should be fine and a suit for DH. I would give $180 as a couple more if your kids are invited too since this is a "top client." As always if your budget is less, then that is fine to give less. But if this is a person that orders tons from you, I could easily see giving $360.

Re: Help a Gentile out! Bat mitzvah question...

Weekday services are not the norm, most Bat Mitzvah services are held on Saturday (Shabbat). So it looks like you are only going to the party.

Like pp have said, give in increments of $18 and whatever you can afford.

Ok, well I can't argue with that. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Have fun, by the way -- sounds like this should be a nice one.

Re: Help a Gentile out! Bat mitzvah question...

Any day you can read torah, you can have a bat mitzvah- Thursday being 1 of those days.
My guess is that they do not belong to a synagogue and are having a private ceremony at the country club. The party would immediately follow the ceremony.
