Every medical expert, doctor, journal, article, etc that I've read says that DC aren't physically able to be potty trained until around 18 months. Some may be able to go earlier, but very few. It's often the parents who are trained to recognize cues from DC. Other DC are "trained" because the parents put them on the potty every hour on the hour. BIL's GF said her DC were potty trained, "But they had a few accidents a day.".... Chat Icon

I also think our parents forgot the exact dates for a lot of things as we were growing up. apparently, I was a "super baby", too. Reading, talking, walking, etc way before any baby does today..... Chat Icon

I am sorry - but it is very hard for me to believe this.

I don't think that my DD could tell me that she had to go potty by then and she definitely could not walk to the bathroom at that age Chat Icon

It's more that you learn their elimination patterns than them actually being toilet trained. My mom was PT'd at a year old.

Well ,my mother wouldn't lie about this, plus where I come from people PT their kids much earlier than we do here in the US, my sister started PT her kids around 11-12 months(normal age for kids to start PT there) and they did just fine. I just wanted to find out if anyone has done it before 11 months. oh and when it comes to walking my sister and I were both walking at 8 months (not sure about my brother)

I cannot imagine even wanting to at that age. They are still babies. They grow so fast the first year, I couldn't imagine wanting to rush that along at such an early age.

I agree!!

A lot of six months old can't even sit up unassisted so sitting on a potty just doesn't even seem feasible.

Well, after reading this here I became curious and did a little research and apparently it is very common in countries like China. Howeveer, it is not what we here would consider "real" potty training" it is more like a pavlovian response - you put them on the potty every so often, give them a cue such as a whistle and then they eliminate. Put it really is not an awareness of the fact that they "feel" it coming and it is not as reliable (accident-wise) as when you train a 3 year.

I am not sure the "potty-trained" is the correct phrase for what is really happening.

BTW: according to my mom, I too, was a super baby - I spoke in complete sentences at 12 months Chat Icon

IMO, that is too early to even think about potty training. I think 18 months is where we started and it took her a few months to fully get it.

LOL that's what I said to my friend. my dd wouldn't know a difference between a potty and a toy and she is 8 months.

From the reading I've done on the subject I doubt your mom was mis-remembering. Children used to be potty-trained much earlier than they are now (children in other countries are still trained much earlier). The fact is, it's a lot more work for the parents to have to read their baby's cues and get them to a potty -- much easier to just let them go in their diapers. I really think the convenience of disposal diapers is the main reason why people wait so long now.

DS has been going pee pee on the potty in the morning since he was about 14 months. Now he goes after naps, too. No, he's not trained, but it's part of his routine. If you do a google search on "elmination communication" you'll find a lot of info on early potty training. Honestly, way too much work for me, but good for any parent who can do it.

WOW! I said ...WHAT? When I first read this.

Re: has anyone started potty training early, say 6- 8-9 months?

But then I would have to ask - is it called potty trained or goes on the potty?

To be it is that they go on the potty and do what they have to do.

They are not saying they have to go.
And they are not going into the bathroom and going on their own

Or am I just missing the definition of 'being potty trained'

DD just turned 8 months and I couldn't even imagine how I would start to train her in the next few months. I have never known anyone to have a baby that age to be fully potty trained.

Do a google search on Elimination Communication. I have a cousin who did it. I think it goes along with Attachment Parenting. The concept interests me but I am not trying it, at least not now or in the near future.

See, to me, potty trained means my son can communicate that he needs to use the toilet and is able to do so on his own......

He'll be 6 months old in 2 weeks and I cannot imagine that he will become super-baby in that time to become, by my definition, potty trained....
