in lieu of doing a complete gut?

We saw a nice house yesterday in PRISTINE condition, but the bathrooms and the kitchen were very dated.

however there is not a FLAW on any of the wood or tiles, and was thinking perhaps refinished the kitchen cabinets and reglazing the bathroom tiles would be a better way to go.

if it's cheaper it is certainly a plus, but I also like the idea of not destroying perfectly servicable materials, especially given the IMPECCABLE condition they are in.

TIA

Re: Has anyone had their bathroom tiles REGLAZED

If you do a search for "reglaze" on the Home board, there were several threads that have lots of helpful information and recommendations. I think the bottom line with reglazing is that, while it looks nice, it is high-maintenance and not a long-term solution. There are more specific details on those other threads I just don't remember.

I painted mine and they were Formica. I think they came out really good, we were really pleased and they're holding up well (pics in my album and I did a whole 'how I did it' thread I can find for you if you like).

One of my friends just painted his kitchen cabinets (he’s a cabinet maker, so he made all the cabinets and then painted them) they look soooo AMAZING (I know you LOVE that word! Chat Icon) I can show you pics if you like Chat Icon

We refaced our kitchen cabinets by one of the big companies and I think they look like cheap shyte. I hate them, they look like fake wood and they were beautiful oak cabinets that were really dated looking. I wish I'd had them stripped and refinished like my next door neighbor is doing now. It's hard to find someone to do it, she found this guy who is a retired woodworker who is doing it for her, but he's in his 70's so it's taking a LONG time.

My dad owns a kitchen contracting company and does a lot of refinishing/refacing of cabinets (especially now with the economy not flourishing)...my mom has had her cabinets refinished several times now and they always look great! I would definitely recommend it from the results I have seen, especially if you like the style of your cabinets.

You might want to FM Goobster. I believe she had her tile re-glazed.

Also, I'm not sure what your plans are for your floors, but I don't believe you can re-glaze floor tiles because they won't hold up.

As for cabinets, I only know 2 people who had their cabinets refaced and both were really, really disappointed with how they came out. I think it's much better to sand and re-stain them. That is usually about the same cost as replacing them - at least according to the quotes I got for both -(but I realize cost isn't your only concern).

I don't know what "refaced" means.

I want someone to strip the old stain off and either paint or stain them the color of my choosing...what is that called?

refacing is putting a veneer over your exisiting cabients. What you are talking about is refinishing, which is an option if you have real wood cabinets.

Thats refinishing. Definitely do-able and can look great.

As for the reglazing - we thought about doing this but after a lot of research we decided it wasn't worth the money or the effort. We have an outdated bathroom as well, but are just leaving it until we have the $ do re-do it.

Refinishing. That's totally do-able. Time consuming (and expensive if you don't do it yourself), but will look good as new! Chat Icon

SIL had the kids bath reglazed. It's a normal sized bath, tile on the floor, up half the wall in the room itself, and all the way up the wall in the bathtub- it cost $1500 and looks amazing. (they had it done it a crisp shiney white and painted the upper part of the bathroom wall a slate blue- looks SO gorgeous).

They say glazing lasts about 8 years, but BILs mom had it done over 10 yrs ago & its still in perfect condition.

For the kitchen... what about just sanding them down and repainting them? (works if you want white or black), or staining them. If you watch hgtv for like a week, you'll feel like an expert in no time Chat Icon
