Has anyone had experience with Castor Oil to induce labor?

I am just looking for opinions of ladies who have tried it or may know someone who has. I have researched it on the internet, and it seems that all of the websites that are from midwives say it is safe to try once you are 38 weeks, and the rest that are just random websites say DO NOT try it. No flames please, just looking for opinions from people who have BTDT. Thanks!

No flames, but from what I understand, the it could make the baby pop therefore ingesting miconium and cause lung issues upon delivery. It is a chance I would not take. I would rather see you squat, excercise, have s*x, eat spice food, or be induced then drink the oil.

That is actually not true...its and old wives tale and was never unfounded that Castor Oil causes the baby to pass meconium.

The way Castor Oil works is that it causes you to clear out your GI tract causing smooth muscle contraction of the GI system which in turn can help to trigger labor.

Just like in normal early labor where the body automatically begins this "cleaning out progress"

THis being said, you should always check with your healthcare providor when doing something like this so that they are aware and can advise you o the best dose etc.

I know my midwife practice does not usually reccomend trying to induce labor with castor oil until closer to 40 weeks because it is not as effective earlier....

Re: Has anyone had experience with Castor Oil to induce labor?

all I know is my friend did it...her gyno recommended it (but said I never told you this wink, wink) it was combined with other things, but mainly for taste I believe. within hours she was in labor, her DS was born healthy and fine. I did squats at 9pm a week 1/2 before DS was due and that night (morning) at 2am my water broke. DS was born at 8lbs 15 oz so I was happy to go a little early.

Honestly, a friend did it and she had intense diarrhea all throughout her labor. Not pretty. She said that they kept cleaning the table as she was contracting and pushing. When you push you are using your anal muscles, not the front- so it is like you a squeezing out a BM. She said even after she delivered, she still had cramping and diarrhea. She couldn't enjoy the baby until hours after.

Maybe if you took very very little.... just a thought.

I don't know about castor oil, but my SIL took evening primrose oil and she swears it put her into labor with my niece.
