Happy V Day!!!! -- (and NO i'm not talking about valentine's day)

Hey everyone--I know today is Valentine's Day, but for just a few minutes forget about the cards, candy, flowers and jewelry--and read about this great organization.

Feb. 14th -- for the past ten years has also been known as "V Day" -- named so by Eve Ensler's organization (author of the Vagina Monologues), Stop the Violence. It has raised over $50 million dollars to support to support local anti-violence organizations in the U.S. alone.

It also focuses on violence against women around the world, especially among civil war torn countries in Africa where rape is used as a weapon of war, as well as their struggles for independence and equality internationally.

"Each year V-Day increases awareness by focusing on a specific group of women in the world who are resisting violence with courage and vision. In 2008, the spotlight is turned to New Orleans and the Gulf South. The spotlight will highlight the daily ongoing work of women in their communities who have steadfastly kept New Orleans and the Gulf South alive with little to no resources. These women - “Katrina Warriors” - will be honored for their strength and resilience in the face of devastating loss. The spotlight will bring global attention and funds so that women may be safe and empowered in a region whose pulse beats like no other."

While we might be sad that we didn't get flowers at work or that perfect heart shaped pendant---remember how there are other women out there who struggle daily just to survive.

Happy V Day! I saw the Vagina Monologues while in college - it truly was an eye and ear opening show!

its amazing isn't it? never have i laughed/cried so hard during a show....about the vagina!

i wish i could go to new orleans for the big Vday event in April---the largest production of the Monologues at the Superdome!
