Latkes are delicious! I was just wondering if some people were going to do anything different, being that they fell on the same day and all.

I think I heard this hasn't happened in 125 years? I could be mistaken

Ah, I see. Seems so early! I'm not religious, but I feel like Easter has been early the past few years.

It's interesting to me how certain holidays can shift. One of these days I have to find out how it works and what it's based on.

All of the Jewish holidays were early this year.

Jewish holidays actually occur on the same day every year: the same day on the Jewish calendar! The Jewish calendar has a different number of days than the calendar you use because the Jewish calendar is tied to the moon's cycles instead of the sun's. The Jewish calendar loses about 11 days relative to the solar calendar every year, but makes up for it by adding a month every two or three years. As a result, the holidays don't always fall on the same day, but they always fall within the same month or two.

Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. Not sure how that came to be, but I looked it up a few years ago and that's why sometimes it's in March and sometimes in April.

I'm not Jewish, but this sounds delicious--especially latkes with cranberry applesauce, challah bread stuffing, and pecan pie rugelach

I am not Jewish, but I would love nothing better than latkes with my Thanksgiving meal. Maybe I should bring that up to the host of our dinner. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Me too!

We are having Thanksgiving at MIL's this year, and I suggested that we try making sweet potato latkes. It is so weird having the holidays together, but since Chanukah is 8 days, we'll celebrate it separately with our families.

This is true! Some people look at me like I have 100 heads when I say it though! ! No one believes that it has to do with the moon!

Just like the Jewish holidays, the christian ones also went by the lunar calendar. The only Christian holiday that falls on the same date every year is Christmas and that was a political decision (having to do with the church incorporating the pagan holiday celebrating the winter solictice since historians believe Jesus was actually born sometime in the fall)
