Grrrr...contractors!!! Need advice quick - what would you do?

We hired a guy to do some tape & spackle work in the house and he's *almost* done but not completely. He wants to get paid in full tonight and come back and "finish up" tomorrow! Chat Icon

For the record we've paid this guy about 50% of the total job quote so far and everytime we paid him a portion of it, he was a no show for work the next day.

Oh yeah, and he "borrowed" DH's miter saw and drill for another job. Chat Icon Without permission, I might add. But of course he'll bring those back tomorrow too.

Anyway, he's playing the sympathy thing "oh, you don't believe me - of course I'll be back tomorrow to finish up! I need to pay my mortgage so I HAVE to get the full amount tonight!!"

He's not letting up!! So I'm telling DH that we'll tell him that he can get everything minus $100 for the one task he has left to do, and $200 for DH's equipment that he still has hostage somewhere. I think that's MORE than fair!!

If we pay him 100% tonight - what's to make him come back tomorrow!!

I wouldn't!!
If he needed the money so badly to pay his mortgage, he should have timed himself better to make sure he finished tonight so he could be paid in full!!!

Re: Grrrr...contractors!!! Need advice quick - what would you do?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Tell him he'll get paid when the job is complete!! PERIOD!

The fact that he has to pay his mortgage ISN'T YOUR PROBLEM!!! How unprofessional too that he took your DH's tools to do someone elses work! You should def tell him he should give you guys a percentage off, due to the fact that if it weren't for your DH's tool, he wouldn't have been able to complete the other job!! The nerve of some people!!!!!! Chat Icon

Re: Grrrr...contractors!!! Need advice quick - what would you do?

OMg, NO NO NO.
We had this with our screen guy..we were supposed to 50% at contract and 50% at completion...this guy then turned into either:
A. The biggest liar int he world
B. The man with the most bad luck ever.

In the weeks between contract he kept not showing up for a couple of days and then would come back asking for money becasuse:
1. his daughter was in the hospital
2. his wife was in a car accident
3. his son broke his leg
4. his mother passed away.

When he asked for the remaining balance because his rent was due soon...I just sent, I guess my screen will be done soon then too.
I wouldnt budge at that point because I was fed up...in the end, my screen was done few days later, right before his rent was due.

This guy's name is Kenny. But the stories certainly are similar. Did Studmuffin get his saw back?! Chat Icon
