GOV. pATTERSON WANTS TO CHARGE FAMILIES FOR E.I. (PLZ. SIGN A PETITION!)
my e.i. service coordinator just left and she told me that gov. paterson has a buget proposal that would affect e.i. and spec. ed. services.
these are the shortened version of the proposals that i copied from the petition i just signed:
- charge a monthly $150 co-payment
-impliment an impossible payment system which will likely put many current providers out of business
-changing the eligibilty criteria for children with speech delay
-establish additional bureaucracy, paperwoek, red tape by implementing the proposed provider approval/reapproval process
-changing the special ed. itinerant teacher reimbursment methodology and shifting IDEA grant funds
there was a website that was listed on petition against the proposal but i'm not sure if you need to contact e.i. to get a hard copy petition (i signed 5 sheets for the petition). here's the website though.

This guy needs to be thrown out of office - between this, healthcare cuts and wanting to cut all funding for the zoos, aquarium etc - this is ridiculous.
There will be many families that can't afford to pay to get their children the help that they need - that is sickening if this goes thru.

I guess I might as well file for bankrupcy right now then! Live on food stamps and when I die, I leave DS as a homeless person.

The ramifications of that will be horrible if it goes through. The thought of the countless children with delays and disabilities not receiving the help that they need because most families cannot afford that makes me ill.

I really hope this doesn't go through.
In New Jersey it isn't free...there is a family cost share based on income. My son is qualified for PT and speech and I have to pay $45 per hour for it. They cap the monthly amount at $450 so if you needed extensive services the most you'd pay is $450. But still, $45 a pop adds up really quick!

This man needs to be impeached I cannot stomach him, with the healthcare cuts now this you think someone like him would be more sympathetic given the fact that he is partially blind or whatever he is but you know basically someone that benefitted from great programs such as these growing up beacuse of his disabilty I just can't stand the sight (no pun intended) of this man

Thank you. I wasn't going to say it because it is too easy, but he should truly be ashamed of himself. I'd like to see him pay retroactively for any of the services or accommodations that he has benefitted from in his lifetime should this ever go through. (Im pretty sure EI did not exist then but you know what I mean). This is an embarrassment. As a teacher of children with special needs within the city of New York, I know first hand how EI works and how it benefits children. I also know how many of the families whose children get and continue to need services are already getting some form of public assistance so how the hell are they going to afford an additional $150 a month? I also know what happens when kids do not get services at all. Shame on you Governor Patterson. Shame on you!
