Gift for 3 year old Birthday Party?

I'm new at this - Sean has his first 'friend's' birthday party on Saturday.

WHAT do I get/spend on this kid ????

I've been gifting a lot of cameras for DS's "better" friends.

Last year, my staple gift was a scribble and write.

Just friend and you really don't know the family too well... I think a nice age appropriate toy at Target or TRU for around $25 is fine. Even better if the toy is on sale or something.
Sometimes I'll throw in a book or coloring book.

Also depends on the season. Summer I usually get an outdoor kind of toy. Maybe grill set, slip and slide or fun sprinklers.

I spend about $20 if only one of my kids are invited and $30 if both of my kids are invited. I try to stock up my gift closet so I have gifts and most retail for $30-50. As for what to give:

cars, trains, trucks, board games, art supplies, lego duplo, imaginext. Right now target has a lot of things on sale:
