Getting Twins into a Routine/Schedule

How old were your twins when you managed to get them into some sort of routine? My twins are 5 weeks old, which I realize is probably way too early to expect anything with certainty, but most of the time I feel like I'm treading water. I am breastfeeding them, also pumping so they get the occasional bottle of pumped milk too, and it feels like all I do is nurse them. Someone is always crying and of course since they are so little they just want to be held, which is rough when I'm the only one with them.

Yesterday morning I managed to get them to nurse, then 'play' (look at the mobiles in the crib), and then they kind of rested, but that was only 1 hour and then they were both freaking out again.

Any suggestions would be awesome!

Re: Getting Twins into a Routine/Schedule

I think you are heading in the right direction. By 5 weeks my kids were on pumped milk (and yes I felt like all I did was related to feeding 99% of the day, which I am pretty sure is normal) and they were on a feeding schedule of about every four hours. Beyond that though, we subscribed to the eat-play-sleep routine which translated really nicely into a more traditional routine/schedule as they got older. I'd say around 3 months (they were born a month early) that feeling of treading to keep your head above water started to dissipate as they started being more aware, and the loosey-goosey routine really solidified into something more legit with naps and stuff and I am sure that part of it was ME getting used to the routine of taking care of twins.

My advice? Keep on keeping on, sounds like you are doing the right thing and they'll get bigger and easier, and you'll get more accustomed and be a pro. It all seems to work out in the end, as much as I hated hearing that in the beginning :)
