Gardening question - trimming a tree/bush

We have a VERY large burning bush in the yard and it has gotten a little too wide.

Anyone know what time of year is best to do a major pruning? And can this type of tree handle a major "hacking"?

From what I know about Burning Bush is that they have invasive habits. So I wouldn't be surprised if you could hack the heck out of it with no adverse affects. But I'm sure a google search could clear that up, if no one else here knows.

I love the way they look this time of year.
