Fun art ideas for bday party

For DS first bday we are having lots of people and a pool party. Family and close friends with kids. For our first DS we hired entertainment since we weren't in nj yet at our house.
Now the friends kids are older so wouldn't be as much into singing and dancing with someone. Besides the pool we wanted to do something else for whoever wasn't swimming.
Some cute are project. The theme is luau. First was thinking sand art, but it's adding up for the amount of kids. Plus, if the weather is bad I don't want to do that in the house and it would be a waste
Any other ideas? Was thinking of going to michaels soon.

what about making your own lei? or grass skirt? what about a hula dancing contest as well as the one where you go under the stick (I can't remember the name).

Last year I went to a birthday pool party and the crafts were sand art (I did read your post, I swear! lol) and coloring your own beach ball, probably purchased from Oriental Trading.
