FSA spending account and not covering OTC stuff?? (Please don't move)

I know they started doing that January 1st. Now i always keep AZO on hand in case i get a urinary tract infection and it's $8 a box and FSA does cover it but now you have to have it written on a script, which my doctor said they are not allowed to do because it is over the counter but the prescriptions only give me 6 pills which won't last me long. So how am i supposed to get AZO now if FSA won't cover it unless it's on a prescription pad and the doc can't do that because it's over the counter....this new law sucks!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Not sure I understand? Chat Icon

You can buy it OTC but just won't get the tax benefit through the FSA.

Can your doctor write Rx with refills?

They can surely write scripts for over the counter meds.

My allergy doctor writes me a script for Allegra (over the counter) and I submit that, the register reciept and a form for reimbursement from my FSA company.

He can write whatever he wants on his prescription pad. My doc will also write blood test requests on the pad, and that's not a drug.

He probably just doesnt want to pay - they have to pay a fee for those pads so he probably doesnt want to 'waste' one by using it on an over the counter drug. Chat Icon

I just think he's being uncooperative. My doc writes anything I want on a prescription pad.

my doctor has a sign up which says they are not writing scripts for over the counter meds... I think something about how the demand for it would be large.

imo I'm not switching doctors cause I love my doctor, but if its that big an issue for you and you don't like your doctor then call up other doctors to see who will write them and switch.

THIS! Medicaid patients get all OTC stuff covered if they have a script...vitamins, tylenol, you name it. He can DEF write a script for anything medical OTC. I worked as a pharm tech, and saw it all the time...for whatever reason, he just doesn't want to. The pharmacy can also fill the OTC script, and then you can p/u the prescription and pay with your FSA card.

My doctors do it all electronically - I never get a piece of paper anymore for any prescription. They just type into their computers and it is right at the drug store ready for pick up. I would call your doctor and ask him why he cannot write a scrip for you.

can your Dr. then write a note of letter head indicating why you need to the OTC medicine. With the new law, when you submit claim for OTC medicine, it does not say that you have to have a prescription...it says you need supporting documentation.

you wont be able to use a store value card at the pharmacy with out a script, but with supporting documentation you can submit your claim the old fashion way either through a website or fax...depending on who the FSA Administrator is.

i could but then what is point of having the FSA, that is what it is there for, they make it so hard to use it now for what i need. I have an appointment with my OB wednesday, i will ask him about it.

same here.... otc stuff was always an afterthought or just something to blow the rest of the FSA money on at the end of the year...

I completely agree.

I used to work in a group home & the residents in the home were given prescriptions for sunscreen, allergy medication, etc.
