Fot those who adopted from korea

I was curious who you went through and also how the medical screening was. We went to a infomration session this weekend and they made it sound like Korea is very ppicky with who they pick and something like having diabetes, having even gone for therpay or taken an anti anxiety med might have them pass on you. I was wondering what your expericne with this was. Thanks

I would be interested in the answer to this too. As we get closer to considering adoption, I sometime wonder if we would even "be eligible", which is so incredibly sadChat Icon

Re: Fot those who adopted from korea

My Aunt researched Korea a lot last yr. The guidelines last yr ( 2006) were age 45 and under at time of adoption, No more then 4 children, married 3 yrs at least and no more then 25-30% above the weight/height guidelines.

That last part was an issue for my aunt who is overweight..although not much , but mor ethen the guidelines. The agency told her they will accept people who are in a weight loss program ( even WW) ...

HTH's.

I know some countries require you have an infertility diagnosis...Korea doesnt. There was also no mental health check at that time.

But I do know they were changing the guidelines for 2007 ( which would technically be now) so you might have to check further.

It depends on which Korean agency you work with. SWS (Social Welfare Society) in Korea from what I understand is the strictest in terms of their eligibility requirements, which do include a clean health record without prescription drugs for anxiety/depression or a history of therapy for any reason. They all have weight restrictions - I think those that work with Holt in Korea are the most lenient in terms of their weight requirements. I know Wide Horizons works with Holt. Eastern is in the middle I believe. New Beginnings works with them. Definitely do your research. All of the requirements and restrictions are clearly outlined.

just curious, what would be an example of a liberal weight restriction?

I have heard (from a friend at the gym who adopted from Ukraine a few years ago and is very involved in international adoption) this as well and it is not just Korea. Ukraine and China are instituting this as well.

It is so disappointing b/c we wanted to adopt from the Ukraine in a few years and with me having open heart surgery last year and a congenital heart defect, I know they will not pick us. We are also looking into adopting foster children in the US b/c of this issue. It is so sad that these countries are being so picky. Chat Icon

After I was diagnosed w/IF, we researched adoption a lot. You should look into Colombia and Vietnam, and didn't see any health restrictions in either of those countries. Good LuckChat Icon
