For those that have lost a toenail before- Please Help!

Has anyone here lost their big toenail before due to an injury?

I damaged my big toenail last winter from wearing too tight shoes and walking in them all day.

Anyhow- it's been a long process of the new toe nail growing underneath the old dead one- and since it was sandal season I left the old toenail over the new one and just kept it polished all summer- and it really wasn't noticeable.

Now that I am thinking I'm done with open toe shoes for the season, I decided I had enough- and peeled what is left of the old toenail off.

Well... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
My new toenail that is underneath is all disgusting looking! It looks god awful... It's almost to an ok length- still a bit too low but it's all nasty looking and uneven.

Has anyone had this happen to them?

I had half my big toenail removed 3 years ago. It took forever for the new nail to grow in. 3 years later it's fully grown in but it has weird ridges and lines in it and definitely does not look normal. I've had to skip flip flops for the past 2 summers. Hopefully it looks more normal by next summer.

Ugh- this STINKS big time!
Not so much now because it's just about time for socks and closed toe shoes etc... but it just grosses me the heck out!

Why did you have to have half your toenail removed? That sounds awful!

Yes, mine was cracked about half way across from someone stepping on it. I went to the foot Dr. and he was able to cut away the old nail and file the new one smooth. It grew in kind of quickly and it's been fine so far.

I lost mine years ago(a shelf fell on it) and the nail is not the same. It is much thicker than the other big toenail and I had a nail fungus tooChat Icon

I am going through this now. I broke 2 toes (my big toe and 2nd toe) in March and it's growing in but seems normal so far.

I left the old black nail on there and did not even polish it or anything and wear open toed shoes everyday Chat Icon

I just don't care what anyone thinks of my busted toe. I'm proud of it, it's my 'battle scar' Chat Icon

I lost a big toenail 2 years ago. I tripped on a bump in the sidewalk and it didn't completely come off, so I went to a podiatrist to get it taken off b/c I was in pain. He said I could have left it on, but who knows if it would reattach itself and how it would grow back.

It took about 8 months for it to completely grow back. Toenails grow sloooow! Chat Icon In that 8 months it was wavy and I dealt with minor ingrown toenail problems on that toe. Now, 2 years later the top part, which must have grown about 6 months ago or so, is still wavy, but the bottom part is straight. I think all in all it takes about 2 years to go back to normal. You will have ingrown nails, make sure you wear shoes that fit you well.

Probably not- you are right!
But I am so grossed out by looking at it now that it's like an obsession to me and I'm all self conscious about it.
I just hope I don't have problems with it in terms of ingrowns etc.
Feet gross me out to begin with and now this!! Chat Icon
